Noticed a bit of leaking oil from the front of the car, Opened the hood and found a hole see pic for more details.... I need help... what could have caused this, should I repair it or but a new car, Is it a 1 piece for the entire engine or can that specific area be repaired. ANY THING WOULD BE GREAT

I know that whole piece comes off so you could replace it....but all the sprockets and timing chain have to come off to get if ott...........wow thats got me......that sucks man....

Nothing whats so ever! Nothing fell on the hood of the car. I looked for and dents on both pieces just incase someone hit it and caused a slight crack... but nothing... everything seems to look fine
id say somehow slack in the timing set caused that..but thats just a guess..phil
Its the timing chain cover, it is replaceable. But even slack in the timing chain wouldnt do that. Something like a bolt of something must be flaoting around in there, and shot upward to do that .

Upon a deeper second look, If you notice the cast outside is the same color as the inner sections of the broken area, id say it was like that for a long while. Even an oil soaking would take a while for a clean break to look like an old exterior part.
I jsut noticed the oil drippings 3 days ago.... then poped the hood open the other day and seen this.
I founf the 2 pieces sitting in the creves just under the #2, odd but they were both wedged there.

Tony, one of the links in the chain has probably lost
a side plate after it came loose and hit the timing cover.
Lucky that the chain has not separated !
That casting is fairly hard! Ive worked on nuff quads to know thats one odd site
. My best guess is that timing chain did it however your car would most likely run like ass becasue it would of skipped timming.
That or some one was playing a little ruff under the hood.

You could use JBWELD, but I would make sure and take everything apart and see what caused it first.

Replace the housing and while you have it all tore apart relace the timing chain, gears, and tensioner at the same time.
WOW!....thats a new one for me....Have you ever has the water pump or timing stuff replaced? Here is just another guess...MAYBE and i do mean MAYBE someone tightened that bolt, that should be right where you are missing part of your case, too tight and made a crack that just got worse. As i look at the picture more i can see that there is a cam tower bolt missing....No offense but its obvious that a previous owner doesn't know how to work on a car or you dont...either way its a fairly easy job for anyone that knows how work on cars........JB weld will breakdown over time when exposed to that much oil....
oh ...i would clean that oil off your engine/hoses.
make the hole bigger, replace the timing chain, then JB Weld it

WOW....never seen that before..........i would replace the timing cover, chain and chain tensioner......unless you have a bad shoe or gear ...
Holy man, thats a good one, defiantely get everything fixed, its not that hard, if you're car is in good shape, why not fix it, and while you're in ther fixing everything, replace the water pump if you haven't already, it'll save you time and money so u don't have to do it later on. have fun
Id say your timing chain shot up and snapped a hole right out which isnt to hard to be done when its spinning a fast speed and the sprocket forces it up to the metal ,,, its replaceable but you need to find what caused it ....

Not so cool that it has to be fixed. The only way I can see that happening is from the timing chain having to much slack. You will want to replace the timing chain, timing chain tensioner, and timing chain housing.
