ok today my cavy ir running good but when i go to stop the rmp thing goes all the way down two 0 but when i hit the gas it runs fine and works all good it is just when i stop it does it some one help me
i am having the same issue ...., runs perfectly fine, but whenever i stop at a light or stop sign or whatever, the rpm's dip down from 700 to about 300-400 and give the impression that its going to stall but the car kinda saves itself from stalling...... *waiting for posts*

sounds like an 02 sensor to me, if the car is actually dropping RPM's

just to update the few on this post if u decide to check...., : my check engine light had been coming on and off for awhile and the rpms where getting worse when i stopped so i took it to the shop and it turned out to be ignition stuff. plugs, boots, and i cant remember the name of the other piece, but its a pretty big white plastic looking thing that the spark plugs seem to go through. u can see it if you look under the top cover on engine. appearently these things are known to short out and the mechanic said he has done a ton of these and gm is stupid for never remaking this part better...
You know, i've actually been having this problem ever since i bought my 2000 cavalier ( with the 2.2 engine ).. it's only got 75k miles on it, i don't have a tach but i have a loud exhaust and i can actually hear the rpm's dropping *way low* .. in the span of 3 months the car has stalled on me twice.
I have no performance issues but at high speeds on the highway ( 80mph+ ) the sound coming from my engine varies in tone.. it kinda stays high pitched with a little dip in pitch every second.. and the idling is definetely erratic, especially in the morning!
I was told by my boss that this was due to @!#$ty coil packs in the older cavaliers. Brian, is that what they replaced? I replaced my spark plugs & wires.. it only gave me a performance gain - the problem still remains. If they replaced the coil packs, i will go and buy some MSD coil packs *right now* because this problem freaks me out..

Sadly, no more..
no i dont think so...., it was called the "ignition housing", i only glanced at it, as he showed me how the bottom of it was all burnt black and its a big piece of white plastic that may or may not of had electrical stuff in it... im really not sure. maybe 2.2 and 2.4 are diff.
2.2 and 2.4 r def dif, id replace it with AC delco platinum OE plugs and if it doesnt work get new boots/housing.... or do it all at once
aren't boots also known as coil packs?

Sadly, no more..

2.2/2200 = no housing over the sparkplugs in the housing cover. To be honest... it makes changing plugs a f(&&ucking pain in the ass.
My Cav
I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
Funny. i just removed bosch platinum +4 spark plugs from my car and replaced them with ngk v-powers and i no longer have the problem.

Sadly, no more..
I just had the same problem today, but my car actually stalled, more than one time within my drive home from school. I got Bosch +4's. Anyone think it would help if i went and got diff. plugs?
