Need to replace it to rule out the pump itself being bad, but I don't know where it is and we're sold out of the Haynes manual for an 88 at my job.

From my haynes its directly behind the strut tower on the passenger side and should have a dark green /white wire plus these wires going to the relay grey, red,pink/black and a black /white wires going to the fuel pump relay.I seriously doubt the relay bit the dust based on age (being a 1st gen owner) if the pump is working but the psi is too low it's unfortunately the pump that is probably bad.But go ahead and check it if u want.I would do a psi check to verify the 9-13 psi fuel pressure specs, If it's sputtering or choking down or cutting off it prolly is the pump unless the egr is clogged just discon the vac line it will run disconnected.I doubt the egr is the issue but something to consider.OK
Thanks for all the info Ron. I'm thinking it's more likely to be the pump than the relay, but the relay was only $9 and it'll take 5 seconds tocheck.. better to rule it out now than to "replace the fuel pump for nothing", ya know?

Bumping this back up because I just looked where you said the haynes showed it and it's not there. In fact, I only found one relay in
front of the
drivers side strut tower under the hood, but I've no clue if that's the right one. So any extra help would be appreciated as I'm wanting to get this car fixed up for my girlfriend and she's getting anxious =P

The best I can tell u is go by the described wiring colors I posted.My book shows it to be where I stated.I realize the 88 2.0 is somewhat different but the wiring colors are the same for the most part.By the way did u bother to check the main fuse a 20amp (blowable) fuse in the regular fuse box?Check the wiring going into the relay for the stated colors.I even checked my chiltons online schematics and the wiring appears to b the same for the most part.Worst case just replace the pump which is prolly the problem bc of the age of the pump.If I come up with something else I will let u know.
