Yesterday when i was coming home from work i had my check engine light come on
is there anyways of reading the codes without hooking up a computer ?? on my civic i just count the flashes on the computer. How can you do it on a 97 cav ??
take a paper clip and jamb it into the obd2 port under the steering column. you should get a feeling of whats going on.
no you need to connect the car w/ an odb2 scanner to see what the code is
lafffffffffffff. Actually, you could read codes with a paperclip on obd-1 cars :~

'96+ car years all have the OBD-II system. No flashes used, only pulled from the 'puter with a scan tool. '95 was the either-or year; some cars might still use a flashing MIL to display codes.
You can go to autozone and scan it for free.....or...............YOU can go into the group purchase forum and there is a sale for scan tools......That you can actually scan the check engine light ......and clear it. All you need is a labtop and also download the software off the website which is free.
Scantool GP!

Car is for Sale!Supercharger kit is for sale!
I just went and had my car put on the computer and it read random missfire. I have another post that i put on here about having a misfire at low RPM. So this all makes sense.
Now i need to know why its missfiring at approx 1300 RPM and under
I replaced all my sparkplug wires and sparkplugs and its still doing it !!
So any ideas where i can go from here ?
Next step is the coil packs. The ones on my '96 2.2 sslloowwllyy failed after the wires got old and their resistance dramatically increased.
are the plugs gapped right
i just had this problem..., if you have a 2.4, check the BIG white plastic housing peice where the plugs go in. like actually remove it and look at the bottom of it. if its black anywhere it will cause huge problems....
I dont really notice anything too black, but the thing that worries me is that i have some oil down around the spark plugs
when i had the computer hooked up wouldnt it tell you what cylinder was misfiring ?
it just said a random misfire ?
Iv heard that these cars are famous for coil problems so maybe ill look into that ?
