I glanced around the board and noticed a lot of people are having this problem...however I also noticed that they were all Z24s....I just bought a 1999 Cavalier Rally Sport 5-Speed about 3 months ago...never had ANY problems until 4 days ago, and it's BAD!
At idle, the car will be sporadic and when u pop the hood u can actually sit there and watch the engine jerk around violently in the bay as it sputters. When ur parked and step on the gas and let it go up to about 2500 RPMs, the engine quits there and won't go past it unless u romp on it. It just fluctuates from 2500 to 2700 and bounces there until u let off or push more.
When I hold the cluth in when coming to a stop the idle will go to normla then bounce up a little until I come to a complete stop and then drop to about 500 then back up again to normal. At times, when sitting at a full stop the engine will jerk the car like crazy and shake violently like feul isnt getting to it at all.
When I'm driving, there is some hesitation but it hardly ever happens. It's when you let off of the gas that a problem occurs...when it drops between 3000 and 2500 RPMs, the car jerks violently and the RPMs bounce like crazy. I've hit my head too many times to count now and it really sucks.
I had it at the dealership and they replaced the plugs, wires, ignition coil packs, feul filter, oil and oil filter. They hooked it up to all their machines and said no codes were thrown and there was nothing wrong with the car. I'm sorry, but I drive it every day i think I would know if there's something wrong with it or not.
Friends are saying it might be the type of gas I'm using...I only put SHEETZ gas in it and in my last car ( a Dodge Neon) it did the same thing after a while and I never got it fixed. Others are saying an O2 sensor, and just now my dad's friend said the alternator connection.
Anyone else wanna chime in and maybe help me out here? I have an appointment with MY mecahnic on Wednesday so I'd like to give him sumthin to actually do that day to fix this problem...I got another 3 years on the loan for this car so I can't just get rid of it.

There is another post that has a link that you go and put you vin number in and give you the re flash part number for your car. It helped with my car a little. I now have another engine in my car and it is still doing the same thing.
