Clinking or clacking sound from my 98 2.4L

Hey guys,

Just curious if anyone has experienced something like a clacking or clicking sound coming from the engine. It gets worse as the car warms and generally becomes noticable after the 2500 to 3000 rpm range and continues. After the car has warmed up to the operating temp the sound lingers around idle also. The only time the sound goes away is when you gear down and let the car slow it'self down. I was thinking it could have been a bad gas situation and the car is pinging so I immediatly went to a different gas station and put in some 94 octane didn't notice anything. I'm thinking it's some sort of spark related problem and will probably change the plugs tomorrow. Anything else you guys might think of? Btw the car has about 118,000 km's and no mods. Thanks.
