I have a '98 Cav RS, and recently the cruise control quit working. I took it to a shop to have it looked at, and after they'd had it for two days, they told me that the diagnostics showed nothing wrong, and that it should work just fine...and that in order to fix it, they'd have to replace the cruise control module, and the BCM...because apparently the VIN on the BCM and on the cruise control module need to match. He then told me that after all of that is done, I'd have to have it towed to a GM dealership to have all of that all reprogrammed, and that it would end up costing about $600.
First of all...If they have to replace the BCM, isn't it going to cost more than $600? Second of all, do they REALLY need to do all that? Have any of you had your cruise control go out before? How did you get it fixed? Would it be a better idea just to add on an aftermarket cruise control?

Okay, well then ECU or PCM or whatever you call it then...the dude from the shop just called it "the computer."
is it a 5 speed? if so try to start the car without the clutch the switch may of broken if worst comes to worst go to junk yard and get a new module
The cruise control module has nothing to do with the VIN. It'll run on any car.
I wouldn't trust that dealership any further than I could throw it.

Ya i'd say just go to a junkyard, get the cruise stuff and replace urs.

Two things before I even start looking for a cruise control problem. Do the brake lights work, and does the speedometer work? If no two either of them than that is your problem. The cruise is wired through the brake light switch for one, and the VSS has to be working for the computer to know what speed the cruise is engaged.

Yes, both the speedometer and the brake lights work. The guy at the shop said that he replaced the cruise control module with a new one, and it still didn't work. That was when he called GM to see what was up, and he said they told him that they'd have to do all of that other computer stuff to it.
Well, that GM dealer is full of @!#$.
None of the stuff on my car matches... the PCM and BCM are different, but I did the fuel password re-learn trick. My cruise control module is from three cars ago
ok not trying to make anyone sound stupid but did you check the fuse? anyway check the wiring for corrosion or broken wires and the connector itself. check the vehicle speed sensor, the connector and the wires too. (raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jackstands. unplug the electrical connector and touch one probe of a digital voltmeter to the orange wire of the connector and the other to a good ground. with the vehicle in neutral and key on. measure the voltage while rotating one wheel with the other one blocked. if the voltage doesnt vary as the wheel rotates, the sensor is defective.) also check all the linkage from the cruise control module to the throttle linkage... hope some of this helps.. good luck with it..
