I have a 97 RS 2.2L, when the engine warms up, it begins to make a clicking noise. I dont think its hurting anything bc its been doing it for a while. One of my friends said something about a valve job? Any input on this would be great. I just want the obnoixious noise to stop! It kinda sounds like its coming from around the alternator area.
A lot of cars get that problem. It is the valves, I believe they are sticking or something and you would need a valve job to make the noise go away. I haven't ever heard of it actually hurting anything but our ears. I am not sure, but you may try and oil additive to help it out.
Is a valve job expensive? Yea i think its hurt my ears long enough!
Um couldn't it just be valve/lifter tap? As in, when engines are cold and the oil is very cold on first startup it doesn't reach the upper parts of the engine as much as when it's warmed up? I know Ford Focus/Escorts with the Zetec engines are notorious for valve tap when they start cold, but it's not an issue for them.
^^^^^ VERY!!!!
But it all depends whats wrong. I am not sure if you have roller rockers or not...but heres some might be's.
You could have a small gap between your rocker arm and the tip of the valve...that would make a small ticking noise...this can be adjusted by taking off your valve cover and re-tightening your rocker arms....not to be tried w/o experience and a feeler gauge.
You could have...as was said...a sticky valve (additives do work most of the time for this)
You could have a bad lifter...getting more expensive
You could need a whole new valve train....probably not if you just have a ticking...but this really puts a dent in your wallet.
In the end this could all be in vain...injectors make clicking noises too...as well as loose metal plates and lines.
try the additives first...than progressively go further.

A big dent meaning $500 or a big dent meaning thousands???
Try LUCAS oil additive.......that's what I use
Ok the honest truth... I am a complete dumbass when it comes to cars. I get my oil changed at walmart! An Oil additive.. goes where exactly?
Im not interested in performance... just cosmetics and maintenance.. I suppose it goes in with the oil?? Just curious if that is right... how does that make it quieter?
It goes in where the oil goes in, just make sure you minus a quart of oil, cause the oil additive is substiuting that one qt of oil......good luck!

Theres your first prob. Get a better shop to change your oil.
And big dent.... I mean thousands somewhere in the 1500-2000 area maybe even more depending on what exactly is gone.
