Corrosion on wire, Battery light on
Thursday, January 12, 2006 9:20 PM
ok so about 2 weeks ago i noticed that the positive wire on my alternator is highly corroded, not where it connects but where it makes the 90 degree bend, than 2 nights ago i ran to the store to get some cigarettes, i noticed my dash lights were very dull than my battery light came on... i have no b@lls left in the car as far as get up and go. i know i should pull my alternator off and take it to get tested, but this wire is what is bugging me, where can i get a replacement? if anyone doesn't know which one i'm talking about let me know and i'll go take pictures of it to make it more obviouse what's going on. really sucks my car is falling apart piece by piece but i refuse to sell it.

anyone else run into this problem?

I'd say... clean off the corrosion and see what happens

If that fixes it... then coat the bare spots on the cable with petroleum jelly (eg. Vaseline) to prevent future corrosion.

ok so i figured i'd go out and take the pictures anyways, needed a ciggarette figured might as well.....

now i turned the car on this time with all my lights, radio, ac everything and the battery light didn't come on, nor were the dash lights dim..... i guess i'd just like to solve this matter and put it behind me....

would spraying battery terminal cleaner on this work to get rid of the corrosion? the cable looks pretty bad, what is the name of this cable and is it hard to replace???

That's the main power cable from the alternator to the starter. There's another cable that goes from the starter to the battery.

if I were you, I'd take this opportunity to upgrade that wire... take a nice big 4-gauge wire to the starter, then to the battery. It'll charge better

hmmmmmm never thought about that lol

ok so it runs in this series

battery to starter
starter to alternator

???? just out my own curiosity

how much wire should i get? and how many eye ends will i need to get? i take it you've done this.... also should this fix my problem of when the light came on? lately i've been debating puttin in a voltmeter to monitor my alternator just havnt come to a conclusion of weather to do it or not.... either way thanks alot lenko, i've seen you around here for a while but i think this is the first time i've gotten your advice on anything, thanks for the speedy responses and dealing with my stupidity in a sense...
