my 2.2 push starts fine, its manual.. engine runs great
but my starter wont start the car, its a new starter i bypassed the ignition switch 2 different ways, talked to many people and i know im getting proper voltage to the starter
my problem is that when i do try and start i get the sound of the starter grinding somewhere in the flywheel, i did a quick inspection of the flywheel , looks to be alright......
my MAIN question is , with GMs i heard you need to shim? or wedge to make sure the starter is lined up? is this true? someone please help
hmm whered you get the starter? take it back to them and have them test it if they can... the bendix may not be kicking out as far as it should.. as far as the shims, i dont have any in my car and its been a while since ive seen anything other than a v-8 need shims.. try that and let me know what happens...
alright thanks alot, ill mention that and ill try it.... thanks
Don't know if it still applies to you, but there was a safety recall about the starter circuit heating up and causing a fire in the dash. Folks that had the fires were cranking the engine over for atypically long times. I only have needed a quick blip, so didn't apply to me much, but it was a free preventive fix. They resolved this by putting what I call a small 'octupus' of wires on the starter. Looks like a fuseable link spliced in, as well as an addition relay or something. Might be worth checking, with an aftermarket starter who knows? As for your current problem, sounds like the solenoid isn't plunging the gear far enough out to engage the flywheel.
that is true i already had that recall fixed last year on my 96 cav.. theres like 4 or more recalls on these cars...that could be your problem, but when i had the starter problem it wasnt doing anything at all. the starter wouldnt even kick over or anything, it was like i had a dead battery... all the lights would come on but try to crank it and nothing... so i dont know...
96wetcav, same problem as me.... so i bypassed all those wireds and put a push start switch in.... id like to get it figured out though...... I had that same problem...... and now i just get griding noises...... after the old starter did trhe same as the new one i have
You could try checking the Negative Battery cable to Engine/Chassis ground.
Disconnect the battery, remove the earth cable connection to earth, make sure the cable connector and the earthing point are clean and tighten everything back up.
I was thinking you may have a high resistance somewhere, limiting the current and preventing the starter solenoid fully engaging the starter pinion in the flywheel ring gear.
This seems to be what is happening and would have the same effect the new and the old starters.

ok ill be with the car tomorrow night ill try those things for sure.. thanks..
i got another starter just to see
FIXED.. turns out the starter i bought they gave me was faulty....
new one worked great!
