FALSE. Of the 50 US States, not one has a law prohibiting driving barefoot.

Really? Four of you? Dave I am with you. Driving barefoot or just socks on is so much more comfortable.

It seems dangerous to me, like your feet would have more chance of sliding off the pedals on accident when you don't want them to.

idk...i def feel less safe when i have my shoes on...when my shoes are wet(rainy out) and then i drive sometimes my shoe slips...my feet/socks never do. and my shoes are steel toe anti slip...need new ones before i go to school...no arch support anymore...but thats besides the point of the thread.

If I'm driving longer than an hour, I will... takes a little strain off my knee by allowing an extra partial inch of extension.

Tried it a couple times, but it doesn't compare to a good pair of Piloti driving shoes.

However, in many states, an officer might charge (a) Reckless driving vehicle in wanton and willful disregard for the safety of persons and property, or (b) Negligent driving vehicle in careless and imprudent manner endangering property, life and person. for not wearing shoes. Source

Looks like it's legal, but not recommended. I'll keep my shoes on and not risk the careless driving ticket.

Hi,

I am an avid barefoot driver, have been since the 60's. No one can convince me that a slippery hard leather shoe sole grips a pedal with less chance of slipping off than a barefoot that can literally wrap toes around the pedal top and "grip" it. Then to say sandals or flip flops are better than skin and toes?!?!? ah.....no.

I've lived around this nation, north, south, east and West, and have talked to many people including law enforcement about this. NEVER have I been told or shown it's illegalities. That is an old "wives tale" just like you can't swim for an hour after you eat. You who live in a "barefoot illegal" State, please find and post the legal code that applies to this for your State, I'll be waiting for my guess is you will never find it.

Shoes are, for the most part, hot sweaty and constraining (yes, I've purchased good fitting and good quality shoes).

I've even found that the famous sign found on most stores..... "no shirts, no shoes, no service" ..... isn't a health or safety law. It is simply a store rule and has no legal basis what-so-ever. There is personal safety involved and fellow patron comfort but overall the store doesn't want to be sued if you cut or injure your foot while in their store.

Have any of you ever thought about the safety issue with driving barefooted?? say you get into a head on collision and @!#$ gets pushed through the firewall or the car crumples, whats going to help protect your bare foot? sure as hell not your pedals....

Well at least the medics won't have to cut the mangled shoe off of my mangled foot, it will be very easy for them to see where and what the damage is.

No honestly, a fabric sneaker (boat shoe/ slipper / etc) will protect my feet from damage due to the firewall coming at me??? Ah....I don't think so. I think in that situation I'll have far more serious injuries to deal with!

If you snow ski or do similar sports you are taking a far greater and more likely risk for foot damage than could ever be calculated for driving barefoot.

^^^^^ Im with you on that one too... David

Personally.... I've never been a fan of shoes..... I never wear them at all unless Im actually leaving the house for a decent period (like going to work.... and I always wear boots on my motorcycle) If im just going to the store quick I'll put on my outdoor slippers.

People actually think I'm crazy for standing on Ice cold concrete outside barefoot all the time.

I've drivin barefoot plenty of times... although the clutch on my sunfire was a little uncomfortable to push in (needs new rubber) barefoot until I got used to it..... I'll just take my slippers with me, drive barefoot and put them on when I get out of the car to walk in the gas station.

All this is assuming it's summer time btw.... 20 below and 5 feet of snow.... Im wearing shoes LOL

I've heard a lot of people say you cant push on the brake pedal as hard barefoot which is BS..... you have power brakes for christs sakes. And besides... a half inch of rubber has nothing to do with how hard you can push on something.... just how comfortable it is when you apply pressure..... it's how strong your leg is.... not how it feels to you.

And I also have the CHRONIC problem of my foot slipping off the clutch when Im wearing my sneakers when there wet (raining outside or whatever)..... half way down and the shoe likes to slide up over the pedal.... I've never had that happen barefoot.

And you do have more control over what the pedals do barefoot.... because you both have your toes available to you, and you can feel what is going on better.... for an example..... "heal toe" braking is actually a lot easier when you can actually use your big toe to blip the throttle.

If you want to talk about dangerous.... its the passengers that like to take there shoes off and prop them up on the dash or put there leg out the window and rest it on the passenger side mirror.... now that's dangerous.... and it doesnt happen in my car..... I wonder if thats illegal.
