Ok, this week I have the pleasure of driving my gfs car to work, a 95 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 6 cylinder, which not only get worse gas mileage then my Cav, it is also much slower. Few months earlier I had the joy of driving my brothers car, a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix 2dr, also a 6 cylinder. And again, worse milage and slower then my Cav. Both of these cars are heavy, they don't stop, they don't go, and IMO the are uncomfortable to drive. So to my point, why do we get so much @!#$ for driving Cavaliers/Sunfires? My car stops on a dime, turns on that same dime, Ive gotten 36highway and 32city, and I can easily outrun most cars stock for stock. And personally my car is fantastic in the snow. I guess thats all I have to bitch about for now
because it will forever been seen as an econobox
My 97 GTP gets better mileage then my 95 fire, or my 99 z24 ever thought of getting. It feels like 10x's the car too when I am driving it.
I am not sure I can agree with you on this one.

Do you really get 36 highway and 32 city? Is that what the eco gets?
38mpg highway, maybe around 25mpg city.
Considering the 100hp difference, I think that is far better mileage then even the Eco ever dreamed of.

I havent spent much time in GP/GTPs so I cant comment on them. I have spent plenty of time driving and working on my gfs 99 malibu (2.4L) and I hate the car with a passion. Besides its woefully poor handling, steering, braking, etc it seems like GM went out of its way to make that car a pain to work on. The few thngs, and I mean few, that are relatively straight forward to remove/install are in places that guarantee you will cut yourself numerous times. Honestly...I end up bleeding every time I do anything more complex than check the fluids.

I feel ur pain with the malibu Ronin. My mother n law has a 98 v6 and just to change the freaking serp belt u have to jack the motor up and remove the motor mt,I was like wtf.As for fuel economy my wifes 04 accord with the 4cyld gets about 24 in town consistently. As for my 87 mazda pu 22/29 and the old 85 cav maybe 25 city but 34 hwy.
The best I ever got out of my GTP was 25mpg city driving. And yes... I was driving worse than a granny.
Typically the car gets 18mpg in the city.
Wish my Grand Am was running. I ran that thing HARD and still got 25-30mpg.

i really have a hard time believing that you get 13 more mpgs than the epa estimate. my mom has a 2001 regal gs and the best i have EVER seen her get is about 30-31 on strictly highway miles.
87 Firebird
All stock...........lol.
My 2.4 5-speed sunfire Averages about 32 hwy (dont know about city... I've only tested the milage on a long trip)....
Yes a GTP feels like a nicer more solid car than a J-body when you drive one (because it is).... but a Z24 would hand a GTP it's ass on a road course... Perormance wise... I'd pick the Cavy.... (not to turn this into a Z24 VS GTP thread or anything)
J-bodies have a lot of potential because they are econoboxes with powerful motors (2.4 or eco anyway) but since they are econoboxes they tend to be looked down upon even if some people... particularly performance oriented ones.... are smart enough to know that can be a good thing.
because it isnt a V8 like back in the day muscle cars, its frowned upon. they frown on it until your 4 cylinder is faster than their 8 cylinders, then when you win they cry that you are boosted. yea, well you have over 2x the displacement and 2x the cylinders, and i still get 30mpg
agree or disagree, but thats one trend ive seen.

I've driven a GP GT, it was nice but I wouldn't trade my sunfire for it. As for my t/a, it gets terrible gas mileage, but it is unbelievably fun!
- Strangely enough I'm beginning to think my sunfire handles better...

The EPA on the 3800 series 2 s/c engine was 7.3l/100kms highway. Which is 37.6mpg. That is almost exactly what I have averaged since buying the car.
I don't know where you get 25mpg for an EPA from. Maybe you are thinking city?

I retract my previous statement, the trans am kicks the hell out of my sunfire in handling, lol. If there weren't so much body roll the sunfire would handle a LOT better though.

I own a Series II 3800. GREAT motor, but it only gets AT most 28mpg highway. City mileage is 21 and below. SO I find it hard to beleive that a Supercharged version could do much better
. AND on premium
.

i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"

I'll take my cav vs. your gtp ANY day of the week. My mileage is about the same as yours, but I've got just a tad more power than you do...but mines not stock. And when I say tad...I mean quite a bit, you have what 230, 240...at the crank...wow, that's impressive...NOT!

I live in Canada, why would I care what the American EPA is?
**there is only one true love in my life... and my girlfriend has learned to live with it**
Finally I can reply!
The only reason you're getting better mileage is because it's colder in Canada.

really, then why am i getting the same as him in the US?
You're north enough to where the temperature stays fairly low. Someone in FL would see lower mileage.

my friend from New Orleans has the same outcome as both gutty and i, care to explain that factor?
Makes no logical sense to me, but if you say so...
