I am about to change the engine on my 2002 Z24. I was told that the engines changed quite a bit from the late 90's to the 00's.
I hear the block and interals are the same, but much of the bolt-ons and brackets are different, and it is a pain to convert between the two.
Can anyone tell me exactly what the difference is? what all will i be looking at if i wanted to drop a 98 engine in my 2002 for instance....
(ps my 2.4 has the GMPP supercharger on it, and i know this was only designed for the 2000+ but i have read that it can be made to work by upgrading some of the items above to 2000+ parts.... so again, anyone able to confirm or deny any of this for me?)
I can find a TON of older 2.4's but they only made this "new style" in 2001 and 2002... and 2002 is known for bad wrist pins, which is why i need a new engine... so i would rather not get another 2002.... so that only leaves me with 2001 2.4L and that isnt much of a selection.
my poor baby is sick... someone help me...

I have never heard of the 2002 being known for bad wrist pins and as far as I know the 2000 and 2001 had the same wrist pins as the 2002. Here are some of the differences between the 96-99 and 00-02 2.4
96-99 have a larger starter. (Too large for the gmsc to fit with it.) 00-02 have starter that the casing size is almost half the size of the 95-99
96-99 have a different head as far as the coolant passages and egr passages
96-99 have 9.5:1 compression pistons 00-02 has 9.7:1 pistons
The knock sensor is different and you can't just swap sensors because of the wiring to the sensor and the size of the hole in the where it mounts in the block.
96-99 use low impedance injectors and the 00-02 use high impedance injectors. The gm sc reflash was made for use with high impedance injectors. I am not sure if the 96-99 head has the same size openings for the injectors or not.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR. DO NOT TAKE OUT ONE TICKING TIMEBOMB TO PUT ANOTHER IN. REBUILD THE ONE YOU HAVE OR BUY A NEW ONE. YOU HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING HOW LONG THE JUNKYARD ENGINE WILL LAST AND IT IS DEFINATLY NOT WORTH IT IF YOU WOULD BE GETTING A 95-99 ENGINE.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
I would love to put in a new engine... but the cheapest one i can find is $1600 on ebay for a rebuild long block.
Cheapest crate engine is like $3000+. So new / rebuilt is a lil more than i want to pay on top of the time to swap.
I would LIKE to rebuild or at least build up my own.... but i use this car alot, and cant have it off the road for a month while i sit with my nose in a chiltons book and hands in an engine.
I was hoping to find a cheap driver car that i could use while i work on mine. and then use it for parts after... or find a cheap engine that i could work on while i keep driving mine.
or if i could find a low milage 2.4 that would just drop in for not tooo much $$$ that would save me alot of time. (i found a 2.4L from a 01 Z24 locally with 64k miles and they want $850 for it)
I would LOVE to be able to rebuild mine, and beef it up a bit to handle my abuse. (forged bottom end and such) but i just dont know if i have the time to do it, and i cant imagine the good upgrade parts are any too cheap.... But i agree with you 100%. i would love to yank and beef mine up. i just dont know if it is worth the time/money to do it as i would like.
