I have been doing alot of research about the ecotec motor lately and I think it would be cool if there was a way that we could check and see which plant made my motor. They where built in like 5 different cities around the world and it would be cool to know if your motor came from Germany or something like that! It really doesn't matter where it came from but it's just something I'd like to know.
Is there a VIN search or something?
Not sure about the origin of your particular engine, but there are letters in the VIN that correspond to which plant your car came from. Not all J's came from Lordstown.

4 Cams...32 Valves...5 Liters...This Could Get Fun!
There's an engine tag on it somewhere that has a VIN derivative... you could decode that to find out where the motor came from. I don't know the decoding, but I'll bet I can find it in a GM manual somewhere...
And I did find it...
Quote:
Identification can be made through the use of the Broadcast Code label on the engine front cover and the use of the partial VIN etched on the oil filter bowl.
So, on the passenger side of the top cover... there's a sticker. Might have "RNA" on it, that's the example given:
Quote:
* Barcode (1)
* Sequence Number (2)
* Day (3)
* Month (4)
* Year (5)
* Engine Assembly Plant (6)
* Broadcast Code (7)
* Part Designation (8)
* Engine Assembly Number (9)
* Broadcast Code (10)
The partial VIN identifies the specific vehicle by sequence number.

Oops... sorry about the size of the pic
SWEET!!! Now what plant used what letter calling? I'm going to go check mine right now!
F*** I sanded that label on the side of the valve cover off when I polished it last year... Can I check it directly from the vehicle vin or from some other stamped code on the block?
You might be SOL... try the etched one on the oil filter bowl. As for the breakdowns of what the letters mean... I have no idea. Wasn't in the GM info I have.
take the VIN number to the dealer and ask for the build/option sheet fro that VIN. when they print it off it will tell you where all the major components came from and where they where built. i can't remember where my motor came from but i remember the tranny came from Windsor ON. it also lists all the major safety components i.e. air bags, ABS parts and computers.
