J-body resale value...up?
Monday, November 12, 2007 5:47 PM
It's a crazy world we live in. Just a year ago i could find 3rd gen Z24's (1996's-1999's) for $2000 and less all day every day. Strangely a yearlater after Gas prices seem to be be never going down it seems quietly the resale on small cars like the J-body have inflated like crazy. A guy here in Detroit is selling a bone stock 1996 Z24 that looks like it was beat hard and put away wet. It's a pretty sad sight but he's asking $3300 firm. Actuall that was the cheapest one i saw. They average about $4000+ for a 1996 Z in fairly decent shape.

Has anyone else noticed the resale value jumping on these and other cars? I hope your all getting good money back on your trades.

I know that j-body's in the province I live in (alberta) usually run around 10,000-13,000 for a 01-05 cav/sunfire... the 00-02's seem to hold their value better (not sure why)... I picked up my 01 gt with 77,000kms fully loaded for 4900 but it had body damage... if the body was clean it would have sold for around 10-11,000... I think it all depends on where you live as well

It depends on the car....

Heck, I've seen a few 80s Escorts you used to be able to pick up for a few hundred bucks-I saw two going for 2200....

I think the higher prices are more on the older models-you can make more on them....

I still see 02-04s going for 6999-8999, but have yet to see a 98-00 under 4000.....interesting.

There is more of a market now for cheap beaters that are good on gas....

With gas prices higher (and going higher), most people want a cheap back and forth car, and something cheap and good on gas to park their truck or SUV.

Who wants to spend 10 grand on a beater?

Heck, I could sell my 93 Wagon w/ 140k for a grand and get it........

I've noticed the resale vale has held pretty well too. I got my 99 Z24 5 speed in July of 04 with 43k on it damn near mint for $6k. It has around 78k on it now, with a new fender, and some paintless dent repair from parking lot @!#$s I'd like to think I could get $4500 out of it. Makes me actually feel pretty good about the little car, and it is damn good on gas.

The really cool thing is even if prices are edging up a bit, you can still buy two Cavaliers for the price of one Honda Civic!

For the record, I bought mine a year ago with 57k on the clock for about $6500.

Today is has 82k on the clock and I could get about $5500 for it around here.

It gets a consistent 31-32 miles per gallon for me driving mostly rural highway miles, with a few city miles thrown in. And I drive with a very heavy foot on the go pedal.

Not a Z, just bone stock base version.

back in '05, I bought my '98 Cavi Z 5spd w/ 140k miles on it for $2500.. I drove 19 hrs round trip to get it 'cause all the Cavi's around here were double what I paid.. its nothing like when I bought it due to the mods, so it'd be hard to tell what I'd get for it

So its been a while since I've been on these forums and I've been thinking of selling my Cavi also.

The problem is I'm going to have to go the route of a dealership trade-in since I would need another car right away for school/work.

Any ideas of what I could get for a 2002 2dr Base Coupe? Never been in an accident, no real body or paint damage other than the normal wear and tear.
61,000 miles, auto locks, auto starter, and some dinky 15" rims.

I wouldn't sell my car till spring more than likely if that makes a real difference.
