exhaust system flush?!?!?!?!?!?!
Tuesday, October 09, 2007 10:34 AM
I went to Midas this weekend to have my header welded (lazy bastards clamped it instead) but while i was waiting a guy brought his car in cuz his muffler he got from them, with warrenty, came apart.

So this is where it get fun, to fix it they wanted to weld his muffler to a new small piece of pipe ($ for the pipe), pay for the labor ($$ ~90 an hour) and AN EXHAUST FLUSH
The manager said his exhaust came apart because he had carbon buildup in the pipes and thats what made it rust apart. The guy bent over and took all $450 right up the rear.

If they wernt workin on my car I would have said that it was all absolute but i still might report that to BBB. Seems like there mostly after the rich people in the area but gettin the poor ones too

Carbon corrodes the pipes?

Fe + H2O = rust
not
C + H2O

Water is ideally what you want coming out of your tail pipe. So there's no way around rusting the exhaust unless you use high quality ( correct material) metal.

the work you are looking for is stainless steel.

Typical northeast high price incorrect knowledge to the customer bull-ish.

What gets me is these places will hit you with that hour labor even if it takes them 15 minutes or less to fix.

Report em

I have a very short piece of pipe in my exhaust that isn't actually stainless (where the cat is hooked to the resonator) and you can definitely tell when you look at it... the rest of the exhaust is still shiny.

Did they charge you for the weld? Id say report them. You should have told the guy in a very discrete way that he was getting his muffler put up his ass. Thats just plain wrong. So what did they do for this "flush"?

no charge for the welds, i told them thats what i asked for when i first came in. i didnt stick around for the flush, my guess would be seafoam or wire brush. i reported it but dont know where its gonna go

I went to Midas to have them look at my bird years ago when I started sounding like a Honda Civic...they identified a hole in my muffler, suggested they sell me a whole catback system for around $500, and then told me my shock bushings were gone as were my rear brake cylinders....bought a $25 muffler from Autozone with a 90 year warranty (I kid you not) and had a muffler shop make me a custom 2.5" stainless steel catback for $125...they later welded on my new muffler tips free of charge, and again when they broke off when I backed up over a rock...

I have hear of exhaust flushes at Dodge. But that ONLY applied to 2009 Dodge diesels with the Mercedes-Benz BlueTec Particulate Filter Technology. That required a Multiplexer and DRB. Midas, can't get ether of those. Somes like the shop is ripping people off.
