What changed from Gen 1 to Gen 2 to Gen 3??
Thursday, August 23, 2007 11:27 AM
My friends are telling me that the J-Body was unchanged, exactly the same from 1981-2004.
I know the way the body looks changed but they think everything under it like the floor the cowl the suspension is all 1981 engineering.

Can you tell me what got updated?? Im sure it's not the same vehicle as 1981.

Tell your friends that they are confusing the J- body with the Mustang which was basically unchanged fro 1978 till 2004.

The 1st and 2nd gens (82-94), as they are called, are mostly the exact same car with the only true differences being outer sheet metal and interior changes. Frame, suspension, etc. were either unchanged or only slightly change and still look similar.
The 3rd gen (95-05) were almost completely new vehicles with only a similar rear axle to the earlier cars.

My understanding is that the subframe of the unibody didn't change much. I believe the foot print is the same (distance between al 4 tires). The only thing I know for sure that never changes is the type of wheels. Although desinges changed, they where all 5x100 bolt pattern, and came with 15x7 or 16x7 wheels. You can take a set of rims off of any J-body, and put them on another J-body no matter what year they are.

Oh, don't forget about the Mustange 2's, they where completely different and most where on pinto chassis. People I know like to call them Pintang's.

always been 5x100 = yes
always been 15x7 or 16x7 = no

That is pretty clear about the cosmetic changes that are obvious! What about engineering changes like the floopan or chassis rigidity, crashworthiness?

These friends when they talk about cars like to be Mr. Intelligent and are bigger asses than Cliff Claven. Always looking for attention for being knowledgeable (when everybody's dog knows what they know). I usually talk about other things but sometimes you forget you know.

Right from the fag "The floorpan and basic frame, save for the front end and suspension systems, are virtually the same. "

Read the FAQ, it's all in there.

How about, the floorpan in the third gen's is almost idenical to the floorpan in the fourth gen N-body?

How do you think the IRS from the N-body bolts up to the third gen J-body? Just four holes to drill. I've done three of these now... There's no way it would work on a second gen though.
