New car or upgrades?
Wednesday, August 01, 2007 4:19 AM
I currently have a 2002 cav OHV five speed, mods in registry.
- not fast by any means, but it corners excellently and is a blast to drive.
- At least 35 mpg no matter how I drive.
- Mileage is currently 106k miles, and it runs like when i got it at 23k miles.
- I drive 100miles daily to/from work.
- I found a 2005 LS sport coupe with 40k miles and every option but sunroof, five speed. They are asking 11,800, but I would start the offer at 10k dollars.

I know everyone asks this question, but what would you do? Rebuild the OHV and continue that path, or upgrade to the ecotec? If I went with the LS sport, my B&M shifter, swaybars, and stereo system would go to that car, and I would try to sell my current car for 3-4k dollars (kids around here would probably pay it too...).

The plans for the LS sport would start with an N/A build (head/cams/tuning), and go from there.

I said I was going to offer them 10k. But generally speaking I was looking for a 2005 ls sport with less than 50k miles.

I wouldn't pay more than 9 grand. You can find better deals.

Why not just slide an eco in your car and save yourself a few grand

I'm not saying I WANT TO pay it, but the kbb suggested retail for the vehicle I'm looking at is 11800...exactly what they are asking. So you think I could offer them 9k? I have a feeling they will laugh at me, but I dont NEED a car and i can walk away.

i honestly wouldnt pay that much for a cav with 40k on it. i would honestly offer then 8k. if they get offended and laugh, @!#$ them. your the one paying for it. let them rape some other person. like i said, keep looking around you can find much better deals then that. just because you dont need a car doesnt mean you cant look around.

I don't have the mechanical knowledge for that. I would love to though...but its my only car and i know it would take me more than a weekend to complete it.

I hope a tube of KY comes with that price....damn.

You can find '05 Cavaliers with comperable mileage for 7-8K around here.

I'm not trying to second guess anyone here, but are you taking fully optioned LS sport trim, or base? The model in question has every option except sunroof.

I was looking at the 350z, but horror stories of the reliability of the 6M tranny scared me away for now. I cannot afford a new one. I also considered a new base solstice w/ turbo kit, or a used S2K with turbo kit, but both would bring down the bank account.

I dunno, if i could get this cav for 8-9k, it leaves a lot of room for upgrades...making a 200+whp cav with excellent cornering abilities.

BTW, PJ never dynoed his n/a setup did he?

Really, I think you should go with one of the nicer cars you have your eye on. More engineering than anything ever put in to a Cavalier, higher resale value and more hp from the start. Cavs can be fun to drive but at the end of the day, modifying is just gonna decrease the value of an already cheap car. If you have your heart set on a J though, you could keep your OHV, return it to stock, trade what you want to the Eco, sell all the other parts, make the OHV your DD and build the Eco to be a beast. Just a suggestion. Either way, good luck with it all.

I had something really funny to put here but it was too long.

So I went out, drove the car and offered them 9k cash. They said there is no way they can do that. lol. I knew that would happen.

They "came down" to 11k. I walked. How accurate do you all think the KBB trade in value of the car is for 7300 in excellent condition? How does wholesale compare to that?

I feel like I overpaid, and I know there's a decent difference in years, but I paid 6.5k for my 2002 LS, 40k miles, all options. I feel like 8-9 would be fair, and they're asking way too much. As stated, if you really want another Cav, just wait a little while. They're not uncommon cars by any means, and any day now some old lady will croak freeing up her ride

it had 45K miles on it then.
