Breaking a timing chain can destroy the engine, can't it??

i'd be interested to learn how the chain broke, as weas said that could do quite a number on an engine. other than that, crap, for 500 bucks i say go for it.

Ok well quick question just did a compresson test on the engine and its 180 all 4 cyclinders..If it bent the valves would it still hold pressure like that or maybe i was lucky and just the timin chain is gone

No if the valves are bent you would have no compression at all on that cylinder.

wrong.

think about it... when u do a leak down test or "compression" test.. ur pumping air into the cylinders.

only 3 things could make that air bleed out of the cylinders on 2.4 twin cam:
1.) bent intake valve
2.) bent exhuast valve
3.) broken or not sealing piston rings

now, there obviously can be some variances... there could be a HOLE in a piston, there could be a peice of something stuck under a valve, or the dreaded hole in the cylinder walls from a thrown rod, but that would be hard as hell... most rods that throw go through the oil pan on a 2.4. there could also be something holding a valve open such as a broken camshaft or destroyed lifters, but im doubting that happened.

im saying that if it held the air pressure then it should be fine, and if it broke the timing chain, go ahead and fix the timing chain-it would also be a good idea to buy new chain stubber deals and a tensionor, and while ur doing it u might as well do up the head- grind valves and valve seats, and replace the valve seals.

i myself have never heard of a timing chain breaking on a 2.4, and i cant even fathum how it could happen other than just the high mileage and or somebody beating the absolute CRAP out of it.

UFlip06 said it best: Just look underneath the engine and if you see big hairy balls it's a 2.4 Twin Cam, if they're shaved it's an Ecotec and if you see nothing it's a 2200!

I would get a price on the timing chain and what it's gonna cost you to fix the car before you buy, that doesn't seem like a bad price considering how clean you say this car is.. also I would check into the head gasket, cars those years can have problems in those areas and with the mileage it's probably getting close to the time to replace it...
