Hi guys...
I was wondering, now that I put quite a bit of money on my car, should I invest money in anti-theft devices... especially since I have to leave my car at a train station everyday.
I know most thieves wouldn't even think about stealing a sunfire, but just asking...

I said the same thing about my 89 Saab 900 Turbo until I got it back a month later with onky the shell stil lin tact. Get an alarm.
just keep the outside and inside low key , and any questionable areas you go into , keep the radio down(big reason people get into cars stereo equipment) , keep the interior mods to a minimum , same with exterior
get a alram , and get 1(or more) of the small interior sirens , and a battey back up system , put 1 siren under the hood visible , and another out of site
keep in mind , 80% of the stuff you do to protect your car is for piece of mind , and if someone wants something bad enough , THEY WILL TAKE IT , in 1 way or another

Also keep in mind that 93% of attempted buglaries(whether successful or not) are "smash and grab" jobs. The thieves are simply breaking in via window, or by punching the lock if they don't want too much attention. Then tearing out whatever they can as quick as possible.
I'd definately get an alarm though. Even something simple will deter many "stupid" thieves.
Use caution where you park. Rather than part near an embankment or a curb, try parking where there are spots on boths sides. Don't give a thief anywhere to hide or run when they go to steal something. Also be sure to park somewhere "obvoious." 62% of thefts occur where there is very little traffic (traffic = more chance of being caught = less chance of getting robbed).
But the most important thing to remember is that 57% of all stastics are made up on the spot.
I say put a klaxon right under the front dash. They may get the stereo but the hospital records for bleeding ears will find you your subject
.
Otherwise don't park your cars in places it will get broken into. An alarm may give you peace of mind but it won't keep your car safe.

I like the first guy's advice:
Keep all interior and exterior mods to a minimum...
hehe

well an alarm will help but honestly if they alarm goes off, your not gonna be anywhere near it and no one is even gonna pay attention to it going off. people hear these things going off and keep walking.
another thing , keep all recipts , and contact your insurance company and make sure they will cover your items you have added
you will prob have to let them see the car and take pics , and copies of the recipts
^^^that's the @!#$ty part, my insurance will go through the roof as soon as I declare my mods lol

Not really. For an extra $50 every 6 months my car has an extra $5000 in aftermarket part coverage. I prove I had the part, I show them how much it'll cost to replace, they pay for it.

Mine is already 2200 $ (canadian) for a year of coverage (two responsible accidents in 2003), plus I have about 10000 $ in aftermarket parts... I don't really have a choice though... I'll give em a call

then only show them the important 1's , the s/c , some of the stereo stuff , maybe the wheels , the lesser expensive parts , i would get covered , since they would be easier to replace cheap
unfortunatly , the rate will go up if you want them covered , but think about the flip side , car gets stolen and you end up with stock parts , and nothing else
or you get your fixed back the way it was
You can get what is called a insurance rider. It's like a seprate insurance policy and usually doesnt cost alot. Mine is $48.00 a year for $2500 of stereo coverage. Check with your insurance company.
hmm i havent been charged anything extra and they know about the mods, they said to have pictures and reciepts. im with state farm also!

im lucky, i dont pay anything for coverage of my aftermarket parts, but my insurance agent is sweet and replaces my aftermarket parts anyways.
another idea in your case, would be to get a tracking device installed. lojack is ok but there is some really cool systems out there that allow you to track your car online in real time. and you can get a alarm system with a paging system. that way, if someone breaks into your car, you can call a friend, family or co-worker to check on it

It just so happens people, that I'm an insurance agent in MI.
I can tell you that unless you have receipts, the insurance co usually wont give you
much of a hassle(some even want to see the boxes the stuff came in!, Yes Really!)
If its permanently attached(Bolted in place), most companies will treat you good, If its, in its stock location, IE-radios, speakers, etc.
My Insurance company will give a person $500.00 of coverage on the spot, sight unseen, of additional mods coverage, but anything more than that, It'll cost you some extra $$$. Say maybe 10-12 per hundred in some cases.
The real problem will be when it comes to the part or piece that you got from a buddy for real cheat and have on receipt or anything on it, you might be up a creek there.
Hope that info helps,

called my insurance company. they said it would cost 25 $ (CAD) per 1000 $ of additional stuff to insure... This means It'll cost me about 200 $ more per year. Man am I happy. going from 2200 to 2400 is not bad at all considering what I'm insuring...

There is a trend in Canada over the last three years or so showing the insurance companies attitude towards modded cars.
Be careful. Your broker might not care about the additional risk. The company actualy writing the policy will certainly care. Several companies have shown Zero tolerance when it comes to mods.
If your company is mod friendly, you should pass the name around.
I was speaking to the company advisor directly. I'm with La Capitale.
