Premium, Business Memberships, Advertising
Thursday, December 11, 2003 3:54 PM
This post will be to clarify the rules a bit for everyone regarding businesses, advertising and Premium Membership on JBO.

As Dave has been telling everyone, "Business Memberships" will soon be available and those will come with certain advertising rights, group purchase posting options and a few other perks. These features of JBO are not finished yet, but Dave has assured me that they are being worked on whenever he has time and are very near completion.

In the interim, there needs to be some clarity as to what is allowed and not allowed on JBO in terms of advertising so hopefully all this will clear up any questions everyone may have.
Quote:

10. Personal "For Sale" posts are NOT allowed. Private ads may be posted in the classifieds.
Many people have gotten emails from me lately asking them to advertise their parts/vehicles for sale in the JBO classified ads rather than in the forums. This includes references to parts for sale in signatures as well as in the title and body of your post. This is (and actually always has been) a standard rule of the forums. This will not be changing under the new structure, whether you are a Business, Premium, or Standard member. "For Sale" posts will be immediately deleted.
Quote:

9. Advertising in the forums is prohibited. For advertising information please click here. Approved advertisers may post sale ads as outlined in their agreement. Abuse of this policy WILL result in a ban.

Advertising by non-business level members is STRICTLY PROHIBITED in the forums. Business members are those that are identified separately from 'members' and 'premium members' and are clearly labeled in their profile. Prohibited advertising includes forum posts and text/graphics/links in the signature area of posts.

Posts announcing NEW products is welcome. If a new product is NOT made by your company, you may only announce it's availability, you may not post sale details unless you are a business member.

Businesses have two options to sell their products to j-body.org members -
1. Use your own web site
2. Pay for advertising
This information from the JBO rules page again makes reference to Business Memberships which are not currently avaialble. What is being done in the mean time is to enforce the rules as they were before the concept of Business Membership was in place which is as follows: Limited advertising may be done by Premium Members ONLY. By limited, we basically mean that we don't want the JBO forums to turn into a full color catalog for your company. Company links/graphics in your signature (assuming the sig meets all the normal sig criteria), product announcements, GP surveys and sale announcements are all ok.
Dave wrote:A little about business memberships - first off, the term "membership" is a bit misleading. It is not a site membership at all. The business listing is completely separate from the site membership - however one or more members can be associated with a business - at least one must be, as an admin. There will be several levels of businesses. They will include advertising, group purchases, and a whole lot more to be announced soon. Additionally, they would include automatic premium membership for the admin (perhaps not the most basic one though, that is to be decided) and can include more memberships, for those businesses that have other partners/employees/etc on this site.
Keep watching for Business Memberships, as they will be avaialble soon. As Dave said above, the business membership is something totally separate from your Premium Membership. This means that those of you that will have to "go premium" to continue advertising will be losing nothing by doing so. Business Membership is merely an extension of your Premium status to identify you as a business and give you advertising rights, group purchases and the like.

To summarize everything....
If you are a , we thank you for your support of The J-Body Organization. If you have a business, you have permission to use the JBO Forums as a means of limited advertising, including product announcements, GP Surveys ("What would you like to see in a Group Purchase?"), placing company graphics or links in your sig, etc. More options will become available to you once Business Memberships become available and that information will be online soon. If you have parts for sale personally, we ask that you list them in the JBO classifieds and not in forum posts and that you don't use "sig space" to advertise personal sales.

If you are a we welcome your participation in JBO but we ask that if you do have a business that you register as a Premium Member before you use the site as an advertising medium. Dave puts a considerable amount of time and money into the development and upkeep of the site. It stands to reason that those who would gain by advertising on the site should contribute to it's well-being. Your company graphics or links to your company's website should not be included in your signature. Posts that are obvious advertisements or solicitations for business by non-premium members will be deleted. As with Premium members, please do not use the forums or "sig space" to advertise personal items for sale; please list those items in the classifieds.

I think that covers about everything, but I'm sure that as usual I have missed something somewhere along the line. If anyone has any questions about this thread, feel free to email me (jimmyz@j-body.org) and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Questions about normal site advertising (banners, etc), as always, can be directed to Dave.

Thanks for your time...

Well, if I'm recalling the correct post, I deleted it because it sounded like something that belonged in the classified ads. Since personal for sale ads are not allowed in the forums, that's how it gets dealt with.

However, if it's for a business, then I don't think it belongs in the classified ads. Why not set up a web page for your product and have a link in your sig to point people there rather than to the JBO classified ads? My feeling is that classified ads are there for personal for sale items and using them as an advertising medium for a business is, at best, unprofessional. I'll get Dave to clarify what should and shouldn't be in the classifieds, but with business memberships on the horizon, I don't know how well businesses in the classifieds will be received. Business members will have many other ad options granted to them, so I'd think the classifieds will be left as personal ads only.

All of this will become much easier once business memberships are in place, but for the time being Premium Members are being given broader leeway when it comes to advertising.

ALSO...it's been brought to my attention that Dave has, in the past, allowed personal for sale posts in the regional forums. He also intends to continue to do so. This will be good for people selling body kits, wheels, etc, that would be tough to ship and that sorta thing....much easier to have someone local find out about it and come pick it up. My apologies to any of you that had personal ads there that I deleted...I just didn't know about that exception. Feel free to re-post your items there, or in the classifieds.

SWM seeking SWF for kinky bondage session using warm monkey leather and red-rope lico....wait a minute...no personal ads...right

seriously, i like that idea, and the similar policy is being adopted for JBNW on advertising. Besides, nothing is ever free. What's some extra money for being able to advertise a buisness and selling of your products and getting it to the SOURCE for many J-body enthusiasts? <br>

Funny how 5 months ago I continuously had my wheels deleted. Only makes sense to allow that, there is no reason not to....... Thanks!

I just want to clear the air up on one thing........i have in my sig. a link to the group buy i found that a company (hidynamics.com) was willing to do for us.

At one point there was about 3 posts a day asking about HIDs.....so i took it upon myself to get us a bussiness that would cut jbody a good deal....and save fellow Gm tuners some money.

Now i just got a forum warning stating about solicating for a bussines....i just want to clearify that i have no relation to this bussiness what so ever.....So its not like i,m gaining anything from this.

and i even e-mailed dave and he said i could post this in the exterior forum about this group buy but since this isn't my company i can't make a group buy up for it.

so i would like to be able to do one or the other.

Be able to post in the forums
or
Set up a group buy for the HIDs

I mean personally i think its kinda unfair to put all these restrications on something that could save the entire community money!

I mean i,m not trying to break the system.....I just think that this is something that is beneifical and not hurting or damaging to the site in any way.

SO if what your saying is you would rather pay full price for something then get a good deal on it.....i will Glady take it out of my sig. and never speak of it again.

But i wish you would please clearify this for me........oh and btw, I don't mean to say any of this in an angry tone or anything....I know typing never really show emotions..lol

thanks,
Alex

I get what your saying, but here's what I think Dave's thinking is behind the premium only stuff:

Non premium members are using this board for free. They put links for businesses in thier sigs, they get the business from this site, for free.

Now how is that fair to Dave, who is stuck with huge server bills and bandwidth costs? They are making money, but Dave is supporting them for free?

At least with premium members, they pay thier monthly or yearly dues, so Dave does make money from them to help pay for the costs of this site. A lot of people forget that to run a site like this takes a LOT of money and hard work, so why should Dave get the shaft when other businesses are getting extra cash?

Just pay the $3.00 per month, it won't kill you, and you can keep the link in your sig.
