There's been some language specific topics bleeding into the other threads, so let's get on with it.
First, the background of my views. I'm 100% of Mexican descent. But it's not even that simple. As you all know, "Mexicans" are a recent world culture. Further back, I'm native American, from two diferent tribes..one near San Diego, one from here in Fresno, CA. I had one great-grandparent who was 100% Spanish (blonde, blue-eyed). In all, the very definition of Mexican.
BTW, even though I could get indian gaming money, I don't. I think casinos are a cancer and should stay contained to certain areas of the country, so I don't accept any money. I've never accepted any assistance ..money, job, educational...based on my heritage, period.
Anyway..
My ancestors did not migrate to this country, the U.S. migrated to us. We were already here. I do not speak one lick of Spanish for this reason, because my grandparents were BEATEN in school if they dare spoke any spanish anywhere on campus. They didn't want their kids beat, so they didn't even bother to teach them. My Dad knows zero spanish, but my Mom learned later in life, but her Spanish is extremely poor at best.
When I go to visit family in the
desert down south, almost every speaks spanish, because there are TONS of Mexican immigrants. *I* get discriminated against by some of them because I don' t speak spanish. I get dirty looks from cashier, gas station attendants, waiters, bar tenders, etc.
They call me "pocho", which is derrogatory basically meaning I'm a brown honky.
The disconnect isn't too bad overall, but at times it's bad. Because of my experiences I've long sided with Republicans like CA Gov. Pete Wilson, who eliminated affirmative action and forbade schools from teaching any subject in spanish (it's called language immersion and it's worked, BTW).
This whole topic is why I registered Republican when I was 18.
I strongly believe that English should be declared the national language. To me it's the obvious thing to do.

Agustin: I'm curious, you say you're against the teaching of any courses in spanish (I would expect however, the teaching of the SPANISH language), however, do you mean immersion in english for spanish speakers or spanish for english speakers?
Here in Canada, because we have 2 languages officially, you can have instruction in either language, and all school boards MUST make provision for that. It's not at all uncommon for an english speaking student to take all their courses in french (with the exception of english literature), and vice-versa in Quebec (to a point).

And this is not only an american phenominon. Along the souther border of Slovakia most of the Gypsies there (draw a parallel with any american minority) speak hungarian, even though the "official" lanquage of Slovakia is Slovak.

well I'm Hispanic too and i don't know a lick of spanish and i have alot of them coming to me speaking spanish and it really pisses me off. i tell them i have no clue what our saying and i get the dirty looks i even got a small speech about how i should know my heritage language, the speaker got a switch reply to shut the F@#$ UP I'm an American and my family has been in Texas for a hell of a long time being that my ancestor helped kick Santa Anna out. which is funny because i have family that is related to the Santa Anna bloodline. they to think its good we have Texas though(another story) I do think that any foreign language should not be mandatory in school but more a selective if they choose to take it. its not considered a forgiven language but i for sure hell would have like to learn sign language i still plan too.

Immersion for any non-english speaking individual to english.

I've received this speech several times. I dutifully explain *my* heritage of my grandparents getting beaten in school as to why I don't know spanish. I also explain the difference between heritage, language and culture, as they are not equivalents. Me not knowing spanish has never stopped me from enjoying a good mariachi band.
Though there are some funny stories that come with this situation. One of my good friends is a red-headed irish fellow who speaks fluent spanish because of his years of hiring illegals as a restaurant manager. We went to mexican restaurant one day and the waitress didn't speak english. She started talking to me and I said "no hable the spanish". So then my red-headed friend had to translate for me so I could order. The waitress was so cross-eyed confused at the whole situation she started laughing hysterically and literally fell to the ground.

I thought English was the official "national" language of the US.
My understanding of "official" language(s) is to dictate what language the government will correspond in. IE: in Canada you can demand government services (product labeling etc) in either French or English (the two official languages). In the US I thought Government employees would be required to give service in English but not any other language. If, for example, Spanish services are offered it a courtacy and not an obligation. Am I wrong?

I vote more Democrat these days, mainly because Republicans were hijacked by evangelicals and big-government types.
Used to be "leave people alone", and now it's "spy on them and tell what's right and not right".

I'll go along with the evangelical bible thumer part but BIG GOVENERMENT has always been the hall mark of the Democratic party. I think you meant BIG BROTHER with the spying and such.

There is no american culture, and even immigrants with culture seem to lose it when they get here.
It was a plithy statement that basically, no matter where your ancestral origin is--or what "generation americanized" you are, if you're american--illegal immigrant, legal immigrant, or your bloodline has it's naso-anal interface consitently lubed up with the government since before 1776, you have no culture.

It was, I'll agree. But Bush describes himself as a "big-government conservative".

Well I was refering to more recent Mexican immigrants lecturing me on my Mexican heritage/culture, not my American one.
