Monday, August 29, 2005 2:52 AM
Ok ive just about got enough for a vis carbon fiber hood. the normal one that looks like the factory one. I was told to get hood pins by a buddy of mine cause the the carbon hood could crack. I wanted to know if this would acutally happen cause i dont wanna have my hood fly up on me or crack.

i have seen people use hood pins on a carbonfiber hood and none cracked but i think the vis oem hood can bolt on and u don't need the pins.

all hoods just bolt on but cf and fg hoods are so much lighter that there is the chance of wind getting up under the hood. i got pins just to be safe. i got a cf hood and dont have any problems w/ cracking or anything

hood pins arent needed on our cars...they just clip in like the stock hood, and the hood won't fly up...ive had mine for a couple years now w/ no problems...

If 99 peaople said that you don't need pins, but that 1 person said that thier hood flew up, then I would get pins! You really should get pins. Even if the percentage was 1%, which it's not--it's a LOT higher, I'd still get pins DO IT!

go head dont put them on. ive seen it first hand when a hood flys up. its only an extra 20 bucks to protect your hood and you know its not going' anywhere

I've had my c/f oem style hood on for about four months now. Had the car at 105 mph for around 5 miles and the hood didn't even move. c/f looks cleaner without pins

i kno dirty elf(i think thats his name) had his fiberglass hood(again i think it was fiberglass) fly open and do alot of damage to the car, he even posted pics in another thread about this awhile ago.....

its really your choice but like baggedcav98 said, its $20 extra to insure your hood wont fly up and damage the car... me i will be getting hood pins for my cf hood for that very reason... and u can always paint em black to hide them alittle better thats what i plan to do.....

yea i rather invest in pins and have a safe thought of my hood not flying up. I just thought i would ask and see what everyone thought about it cause i would hate to have to pay for another hood plus all the things that got wreaked cause i decided to cheap out on 20 dollars

No matter how nice many of the aftermarket hoods are, you can just about guarantee that they have nowhere near the sort of quality control and factory testing that OEM hoods have. With this being the case, it's just plain good sense to use hood pins with them.

The only aftermarket company I know of that makes a hood for our cars that doesn't require pins is RK Sport. Their hoods are GM approved, meaning they've met the standards of GM to be used on street cars and, thus, should be trusted to work as designed with the stock latch.

For any other, it's a gamble. Most won't be a problem, but every now and then you'll get to be the poor bastard who has to fix his windshield and roof at the very least because the hood flew up in motion.

As for the locking pins... I suspect that's a matter of who makes them. If you get them from a name brand company known for quality stuff like McGard then I'd trust them. If you got them for cheap, then I'd avoid them and just use regular ones. If they start to rust, they'll cause you all sorts of grief.

I got a class glass fiberglss ram air hood. like many ppl hae said, even if 1 in 1000 ppl had their stock latch fail and their hood fly up, put them in. I did and it took a lot of vibration out of the hood and if the hood doesnt seem to line up as well as you would like, you cna use them to kind of pull the hood down on the corners or whereever you place them. Yeah they do only cost twenty bucks for the cheap Aluminum APC ones liek I got, but i would recommend going with all stainless. It's not an easy prcess either. What seemed to be a two hour project turned into an all day event. And be careful with drilling the holes in the hood. It coudl be an expensive slip. If you wnat a pictorial on how to do it there used to be another thread wiht a link to a really nice set of pictures for the whole process, only thing I'd change is after you drill your pilot hole from the inside out, drill in form the outside to avoid any chipping. Just figured I'd give my input, If you have nay questions for placement or anything, holla at me. triscart@msoe.edu

yeah well I figured with my hood, having the scoops provides the opportunity for plenty of air to get under there and create lift. Even at 100 on the drag strip it hold firm with no sign of the fiberglass around the latch starting to weaken or crack. Only problem I have is at the back of the hood, its only held on by 2 our of 4 bolts so the back flops around a little bit but thats it. I might get hoodpins just because I like the look of then on a mustang. On a cavalier, its somewhat against my tastes. In fact on any compact car, specially rice burners, its against my taste.
My buddy Jeff owns a body shop and he has excellent fiberglassing skills and has fiberglassed some reinforced latches into aftermarket hoods. Im talking about applying the glass very very thick, and it holds like a dream. The hood itself will break before the latch seperates from the hood.
I myself may not even get hoodpins, because I just like a clean look to things...nice, smooth lines. To me hoodpins can sometimes be a little obtrusive looking.

really? wow I thought somethin was up when everyone was talkin about cav's and sunfires...
So what? Are you saying my opinions about aftermarket hoods can't apply to a cavalier? fiberglass is fiberglass, on a mustang or a cav.

and btw, I think that if you know what you are doing when putting a hood on, you wont have a problem.

Knowing how to put a hood on has nothing to do with it. Not all fibreglass, even by the same company, is created equally. If the fibreglass around the latch bolts isn't strong enough, it may weaken over time and then let loose. That has nothing to do with whether it was installed properly.

Z-Speed: Keep in mind here that all the arguments for using pins have to do with safety and prevention of bad things happening. The only arguments for not using them have to do with how they look.

I'll be honest... I'm not a big fan of how they look either, but if I had just about any other hood, I'd have them on. Safety first in my books.

I'll probably just end up leaving the stock hood. I really dont want pins on my hood cause its hard to get them to flow with the rest of the car. unless i get a hood from rksport. But i rather spend 600 dollars on my motor or something a lil more worth it in my eyes. I rather have speed over looks.
