ok who ever told you that you will blow through the metal is a dumb ass
any one that has experience with welding will not blow through the metal if it is mig or tig welder
why not check into a custom shop that does custom work and only custom work
and do not attempt doin this type of work your self like i say you can`t learn to be a body man on the internet
take it to a custom shop

I've shaved three trunks already....the first time, we used fiberglass and bondo and it cracked out when I flipped it onto it's top into the creek. *ouch*

The second time, we just hurriedly filled them in with bondo (LOL) just for Nopi. They cracked out in no time (after a few months, though!)

THIS time, we welded the inners and the key hole up with metal filler panels. So it may have taken me awhile, but I've got it right this time.

So whoever is telling you that the metal is too thin is BS'ing you because anyone that knows how to weld can do it. We just finished welding in a tag box in my trunk, also, so I know that it's sturdy enough!

we put three layers of sheet metal in mine and between each layer it was filled with some type of urthane/bondo
then put a forth sheet metal plate to even everything up it looks like this after we were done...

sheet metal and some type of filler works the best its as solid as a rock
