Fixing Dull paint
Tuesday, August 09, 2005 7:50 PM
My sunfire saw only one winter but spent many days on the highway getting sprayed with salt and sand during that time. As a result the front bumper is a little dull. There are no serious chips or anything but the clear coat looks foggy...just not the shine that use to be there. I went to a local auto paint shop and they told me to use 3M medium scratch remover but to go slow. As I was using it it seemed to really dull the bumper. I have not buffed through the clear coat but not too sure of how to get the reflection back into the bumper. Any help would be great.

Did you take a buffing wheel to it?

All I used was an orbital polisher...you know walmart 34.99. Should I get something else, and do you recommend a product to use to get that deep crystal shine that everyone wants.

I would suggest getting a medium compound and an actual buffer and trying that, If that doesn't work wet sand and buff, If that doesn't work repaint it

Body scrub is a paint cleaner. Totaly different from compound its nice and smooth like a wax or polish but I tell you what that stuff is awesome! Try it for yourselves do half your hood with it and see if you don't notice a HUGE difference. I know you will.

If you're not familiar with using a real buffer, DON'T DO IT!! Buffing plastic is alot different than buffing metal---you need to be much more careful or you'll peel the paint right off. I would use some 3M Finish Restorer, then some Meguiar's Swirl Remover, followed by Meguiar's Show Car Glaze and a good cleaner wax like Zymol.
