yes there is a difference, and yes that is most likely why your gun isnt spraying. I need a bit more info to help you out more though, like what kind of paint are you using? what type of gun? and are you going to base coat clear coat it, or single stage it? Ive been painting cars for about 10 years now so i will try to help out in any way i can. Most paints will require a reducer which will be teh same name brand as the paint your using because they will mix together better, thinner is often used more for cleaning and in some house paints, not acryllic enamel auto paints. Also your gun should have air pressure adjustments on it so when you get yourself some reducer play with those a bit to try to get yourself a nice spray pattern that covers well. My gun has an air pressure gauge on it and i usually shoot at about 3-4psi for paint and about 3psi for clear coat, just let me know, ill try to help boss

What size needle is on your gun? You said you're going to prime it right? Not paint? The primer guns we use have a 1.8 needle... most guns come standard with a 1.4 or a 1.5.

What type of primer are you using? Usually you do want to use a small bit of reducer with your primer to get it to spray better. Usually it will say on the can of primer what ratio to use... whether it's 3:1:1 or 4:1:1 (3 or 4 parts primer, one part activator, one part reducer)... or sometimes it'll have a percent like 3:1:10% or whatnot.
