Found out today that the paint for my car is pretty much more expensive than house of kolor. The real kicker is its cayenne red. A GM factory color. This pisses me off and i want to know what the hell GM was thinking. The person who is doing my work is a great guy and i feel bad for alll he has had to go through to get my parts almost done just to find out that i have to spray almost 6 layers of color with sparkle in between each layer of color. Gm must have went broke painting all the cars the color of my car. Tommorrow i am going to go to a local auto paint place to see how much it is to mix me a quart of paint of cayenne red. I think my code is U164B.
Cant remember but too lazy to go clean my trunk and pull the cover.
Sorry for the rant just a little upset.
the guy i know that painted his car torch red (vette red) got it all for like 250 i think
red is an expensive pigment. Go to a real art supply store and check out guashe, acrylic, and oil prices. Red is always the most expensive because of the vibrance of the pigment.

I could get all my paint supplies to paint my whole car laser metallic blue like the new equinox for $450 or get my fenders, mirrors, and spoiler painted red to match my car. I really like my red so i want to keep it but, dayum expensive. Will my auto paint store be able to match a cayenne red or will it have to be sprayed in layers no matter what? I would like to be able to have it spayed just as a coat instead of all the layers but i dont know if that will happen or not. I didnt think it was going to be so expensive though. I know painting is expensive but still sucks. Especially since i basically have a stock chameleon paint.
damn i resprayed my whole car and paint, primer, and clear only ran me 180.00

I went to a local autoparts store that sell paint and priced some paint for my RKsport spoiler and it was $73.00 a pint for Bright Red U8774. I went to a different place and got some Omni paint the same color and it was $18.00 a pint and it match up really good....

i think its cause of the UV prtectants needed in red paint not to fade.. i hear thats why its expensive cause it shouldnt fade to pink. i could be wrong though. something i read

So would my paint shop be able to make a paint that i can spray in one layer or would i have to still get it layered?
why in the he11 would you have to spray 6 layers, sparkle in between each one? I've NEVER heard of a STOCK color being sprayed like that.
but yes reds no matter what are more expensive.

because i have chameleon paint, Anthony Higginbotham knows what im talking bout. in teh light it is orange. but out of it it is a red. So when you spray the first layer of red then sparkle. as you layer, then you get the colorchange chameleon effect. its cool that i have factory color change paint but still sucks that its so expensive.
And as far as the paint price the kid tried to get it through his school at cost price but it was stil $150. and thats with sparkle, without sparkle is 80.
I've still never heard of a stock color you have to spray like that. Even factory chamelion paintjobs... like what came on some firebirds and such, that blue/green?
Chamelion/Kamelion whatever paints are ONE can of paint that goes over a black base normally. Black base... Kamelion flake... clear... whala. Link me to a place that says you have to put on 6 layers of different paints and colors and sparkle from a factory paint job, and I will believe it.
Some high end cars however, do have tri stages where you spray the base, pearlcoat, then clear... nothing I've seen from GM.

Don't some Cadillacs have pearl in their paint?

yup i just got done painting my car/kit over again, and it stayed Cayenne Red, and when my body man seen the car, he was like are you sure you don't wanna change color? I told him no....he was like even to do all the jams and all with a diff color it will still be cheaper. He said that that color especially while its red and metallic the price is outrageous. But the way it looks in the sun makes it all worth while! But there was no way he sprayed 6 layers of paint over my car! all that was done was all the surfaces were prep'd, then sealed/primiered where needed, then lay the color down, then clear over top....no need of 6 layers

I've heard some horrible things about Omni paints. Think about what everyone says - You get what you pay for.
