Outside door pillar covers - Wind noise
Saturday, March 26, 2005 2:29 PM
I do not know about everyone else but my sedan had a lot of wind noise going on, but could not figure out what to do about it.

A couple of months ago I was at a local salvage yard and someone tried to break into the car - they damaged both of the pillar covers between the front and back doors.

I got replacements from the dealer and when I went to put the new ones in I found that there should be 3 screws in each one and my car had only 1 in each.

I made another trip to the salvage yard to acquire some more screws, I just put them in and it seems to have tightened up the window rubber seal and has quieted the wind noise considerably.

Hopefully this helps someone else.

^^^^He speaks of the great one.

Yeah, my crazy ex-girlfriend (now wife. who'd of thought?) tried to pull my door open by the window when she caught me cheating on her. Broke all the tabs off of mine.

Good info though man.

I think i only have like 1 screw in mine to. All the lil tabs broke...

I need some new ones so i can get them repainted. My paint (did it myself) doesnt look to good...i need the body shop to shoot em again.

Or i might just but some brand new ones and leave em black. Used ones are usually faded and crappy lookin

Anywho....

Yeah, I got them replaced at the dealership. For anyone needing the name, they are called "exterior window apliques" (ap-li-kays) Damn english language.

I may not know much about cars, but I know two things....
1) Breaking things is expensive, and
2) Horsepower isn't cheap.

They're only about $30 or so for a brand new set of 2 from GM. I replaced mine because the paint was chipping off mine pretty badly. When I took them off, I found that most of the pieces that the screws went into were broken off. And now that I think of it, my passenger side was making some wind noise before I replaced them, and I don't get the noise any more. I think that when you always close the doors from the outside of the car by pushing on the B-pillar, it puts pressure where the screws hold it down, and those pieces eventually snap. So I always try to close the doors by pushing on the rubber window trim or the door handle.

Well, I took a look at my doors and it seems that on the drivers side, the black vertical panels between hte front and back windws are a a bit lose. The one on the drivers door especialy seems to be sticking out where it meets the window and the rubber between the window and the panel is kinda lose. Is that my problem there?
How do I take it off? there are no screws or anything. I don't want to force it and break it.

If you pull back the rubber, you will see 3 phillips head screws holding it on there.

Ah ok.
After all this I finaly found those 3 screws, they are all in place and holding tightly but i'm still getting the wind noise + I managed to rip half of my thumb nail off while trying to tighten the cover cause it seems a bit lose. Somehow my finger slipped and I don't know waht I hit but my thumbnail is half ripped off the finger. I think it's a sign to leave those covers alone maybe...

Check your weatherstripping underneath the b-pillar. If it's loose, that may be the problem. Just get some weatherstripping glue and glue it back in place.

OHHH GRRR that pisses me off sooo much!!!!

I have the same issue on my '03 coupe and I took it in when it had warranty on it and they said that all the other cars were like that and that there was nothing wrong with it.

I just checked my drivers door and theres 2 out of 3 screws but the 2 that are in there aren't even holding

I'm gonna go down to the dealer tomorrow and ask to see the records and get them replaced!!!!

mine eventually broke, i rolled down my window on the highway, and the appliqué thinger pretty much broke off lol

i found that it also caused alot of wind noise, and window rattling, rolling up the window sometimes caused the window to roll up outside of the track. if this happens to anybody, replace the lower window tracks, and it'll be all good
