I am looking to change the setup on my car away from OEM, It is a 1997 2.2 5 Speed, nothing really done to it but I am looking to make big numbers at a later date and wanted to start at ignition, I dont want an exhaust because it is pointless in the city anyway, youre hp gains are not enough to really bother. That will be at a later date. I also want to know what kind of ignition system will be best suited for a turbo installation, I am going with a T3 as far as I know ( sorry, me and my guy are still working on it ). It will be at that point that we decide what kind of exhaust we are going to use. It will also be dependant on what internals we use in the motor. We know that we are going to use forged pistons and different rods, but I am having some trouble deciding on a cam. That and I am having some trouble finding out if there is an aftermarket timing set for it.
Anyways, any input would be muchly appreciated, I am a nOObie so go easy guys.
I ABSOLUTLY love my msd dis 2 with boost retard. It has countless options such as a two step launch control, boost retard that is programable up to 30 degrees of retard and many other options. I consider it a must for any turboed jbody.
The MSD DIS 2 is the one with two seperate coil pack lookin deals right, my roommate has one but he is missing one of the "coils". That and it is a mess of wires. The one question I have is how well does it work on a car that is NA. For now anyways. Money talks I guess. It is something I want to do in the future but I want to make sure everything about the car is in top shape before I go and put the turbo in it and destroy something.

if running large amounts of boost, more than a 2-bar map can read, and must tune to a 3 bar, HPT just wont cut it, and the MSD dis 2 will pick up some of the slack. I have heard that there is a noticable difference on N/A cars with it, but I wouls say it is going to be better under boost.
I have to be honest, I am a little unfamiliar with hp tuners . . . .

yea you're noob is def showing here...
flow mods help a lot more than an aftermarket ignition will... therefore that exhaust that you've deemed 'useless' in the city will actually make a much bigger difference than an ignition system.
after flow, fuel mods help
then finally, spark
an upgraded ignition on a stock car isn't going to see much in power increase if anything at all.
if you're going turbo, save your money and buy turbo stuff first.

They may give you faster times due to a lighter wallet, but the OE ignition is a helluva lot better than people give it credit for.
Think about it this way: I've seen OE systems operating correctly in cars that haven't been tuned up in over 100k miles. The plug gaps had eroded to .080". That takes more spark energy than trying to light a rich air:fuel mixture under boost. IMO, wait to spend money on ignition parts until the ignition starts giving you signs that it needs to be replaced.
PJ's got the inside track to making more power... increase airflow into and out of the engine. Everything else is a mod to support increased airflow and power levels.

ok i think i need to replace some ignition stuff on mine cause when i turn the key it doesn't start up but takes like a few seconds. like it sounds like its not going to start up and die but it does after like 2-3 secs.
Im using OEM plugs with MSD's coilpacks (because I got them cheap). The car starts in almost 1/2 a crank sometimes. and it idles a bit smoother. I dont relly calculate MPG anymore, and I didnt feel anything on the butt dyno. I feel better about having the MSD's in the car though... However it might have just been time to replace the OEM stuff anyways.
I agree, unless youre boosting, Id wait to do the ignition. Get more air/fuel in the cylinders. Save and get the turbo and accessories first.
ok so i just put in MSD coilpacks, with msd 8m, wires, and new ngk plugs, it seems that my engine is running far hotter, and its not as smooth as it used to be and it tends to sound as if its about to stall now, any imput?
and yes ive checked and they are hooked up in the right firing order
Ok so i figured out the issue about the ignition, what had happened was after i installed everything, i didnt clip the wires together, so driving home caused them to move and one of the boots from the coil fell off, so in short my car ran for a few km misfiring on the 3rd cylinder
