GP Interest Thread: Tach out module

Ok, I've seen several people have issues with tach pick-up at dyno shops, tach installs, ect. Would there be any interest in a cheap module that would be a small plug in unit between the ICM output and coil input harness under the IDI covers?

I'm not sure if there is room anywhere on an eco motor but I know I could make it small enough to fit under the 2.4 IDI with no problems. I could even make it remote mounted, really however everybody wants it or could make several different versions..2.4 specific, remote mount specific, eco specific(if somebody could let me know of footprint requirements)

This would be a small diode bridge in a small enclosure and have a single wire output that could stick out of the module directly for a remote mount system or just an output to a wire that you could protect and tuck under the IDI and bring it out when needed..or hide in the ICM wire harness? The options are limitless....dont care if everyone is unique and custom really.

So,....would there be any interest? I think a rough target price(subject to change) would be around $17.00 of fixed parts(enclosure, PCB, diodes, bridge, insulators, wire, nuts and bolts, isolators, ect.) and probly maybe $15.00 for me to do it for a custom unit and $10.00 for a run of similar versions(if there would be a decided 'best option' that everybody could live with and I could then mass produce them all at once). So, $32 for a custom and $27 for a 'production unit'

This would work on any car..can also be made to support as many cylinders as you wishl(small additional cost) if there is interest to make it removable and use on another car(possible additional cost if probes were added to the coil driver pickups?). Could be used on COP or DIS system or even DIS/COP hybrids.

Talk to me...what do you all think? good idea? sucks? no interest?

that would be cool, but with the dyno program cant they set it to 2 cylinder or coil pack mode or whatever?

but yea, its a good idea

Sure, there are work arounds....but this would just solve all those issues to begin with. Yeah, this is really a redundant idea but it will help alot when you go to some shops that might not know exactly how to do things or how to make it work.

In all honesty, this would be exactly the unit the dyno shops 'should have' to begin with....but most all don't.

Would this be able to take the place of the saturn cam sync unit that some are using to run the MSD coils on the eco's? Or just a rough signal for a tach/dyno comp?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

It would actually give you a very similar output to the cam sync....I think the cam sync module actually throws in a LM1815 on there to smooth out the output too which I wouldn't do for just a dyno pick up....but I guess I could, think they cost around $3.50 + other supporting equipment would be a few more pennies.
