I just picked up a '94 Geo Metro!
Thursday, August 11, 2005 11:01 PM
My aunt gave me her Metro for free. It has the 1.0 liter 3 cylinder (non-turbo) w/ manual trans. I am wondering if anyone here knows anything about this engine, or any good places to order parts from.

My plan is to find a turbo set up from one of the factory boosted cars and use it, but I cant find any info or places that sell a manifold or turbo. I found teamswift.net and I searched all over thier forums and couldnt find info. I have also searched google and ebay. C'mon .org, I know there are some Metro enthusiasts out there!

forget the turbo setup, drop in a 2.4TC or an ECO

Look for a storm GSI. It has a 1.8L or 1.6L turbo 4 cylinder, the 1.6L i believe was a option in many metros. (Non turbo of course.) My 1.8L prism has a 1.6L trans, very hard to find OEM parts for the GSI. When my brother owned the prism, we looked long and hard to do the motor from a GSI. I know the prism trans 1.6L and 1.8L on some years are interchangeable. So are the half shafts I believe. Auto and Manuals.

Specs.
STORM GSI 1990 - 1991
MOTOR 1.6 DOHC TURBO
130hp @ 7000 RPM
102 lb\ft @ 5800 RPM
max 7700 RPM
Better Gear Ratios also.

STORM GSI 1992 - 1993
MOTOR 1.8 DOHC TURBO
140hp @ 6400 RPM
120 lb\ft @ 4600 RPM
max 7000 RPM

Thats all I know.....

PRND321 Till I DIE
Old Motor: 160whp & 152ft/lbs, 1/4 Mile 15.4 @88.2
M45 + LD9 + 4T40-E, GO GO GO

Get some rock climbing tires, lift it 4 inches, add a snorkle, LSD, and take it off road

your gonna blow it up

just put an intake and a muffler on it. call it good. oh and take off the hubcaps..

my buddy had one..never had any money. Every car he had he bought wrecked and rebuilt it. As gay as metros look, with some nicer rims, paint and a couple other small things it actually looked good

Today the the barrel of oil is at $67.14 and I am wishing I had one of those to go to work! Expect $2.60+ for 87 octane soon.
I say just drive it as a commuter and enjoy 50+mpgs, I know I would.

I've got a 96 version of what you've got.

It's currently got a built cylinder head on it.

milled to increase compression to 10.0:1
fully ported and polished
stainless steel exhaust valves
custom ground cam
custom cam timing gear
couple of other small things done to it

This entire thing cost me $380 and I had to ship a core head to Canada(where the guy is that did this).

The factory rev limit is 7,000 rpm. It has been rumored that if you get a computer for a 1.3L manual and swap the computers out then you'll have a rev limit of 9,000 rpm!! Of course, you've got to make sure air/fuel ratios are ok across the board and you need to get more air flowing.

There are a couple of people putting down well over 100 hp with these little motors!!

The ONLY motors available in your model of Metro is the 1.0L 3 cylidner and a 1.3L 4 cylinder.

Borsty, it is very impressive. Especially when the 1.0L SOHC I-3 was rated around 55HP stock.

My question is; how much did the gas mileage suffered?

After the head swap, I noticed no differance in my mileage. Before the swap, my car would get 40 mpg no matter what. In town, on the highway, beating on it, or taking it easy. It would always get 40 mpg. Now with the head swap, I've not had enough city driving to get a realistic figure, but the highway MPG has not changed. It's still right at 40 mpg.

Before, the car would struggle to get up to 80 mph. Now, I've had the car up to 93 mph and had to back off because of traffic!! It still had a bit more to go as well!! It's amazing how much power just teh head gave.

Brandon, send me an email to Cav_GT@yahoo.com and I'll give you the guy's contact info that did the work. He also has done work on world record top speed cars and holds a couple of records at Bonneville in 1.0L powered Metros!!

FYI, the Storm GSI motors won't work in a Metro, the Metro is a Suzuki Swift, the Storm is an Isuzu Impulse. And good luck fining a turbo Metro, VERY few were made, although the Suzuki Swift GTI had a 1.3 DOHC 4 cylinder engine pusing 110 HP and low 16's stock in the 1/4 mile. It was naturally aspirated.

Just do what me and a friend of mine did. We fabbed up a turbo setup on a 3 cylinder Metro, using parts from a turbo Dodge Colt, I believe. We had custom made intake and exhaust manifolds made, a MegaSquirt EFI fuel system, custom tubing (Using 3" diesel truck exhaust piping, LMAO!!!) and a home ported head. I don't know the power, but we ran mid 14's before the car caught fire and was destroyed. NOTE: Don't route your turbo oil lines RIGHT NEXT to your exhaust manifold, LOL.

I had a 91 Metro that I was going to do a turbo setup on, but ended up custom machining the distributor, lightly ported head, and a K&N filter, it still ran decent because those things weigh like, 20 LBS, LOL.

Thanks for the info guys! When I was in automotive school, we had a complete metro 3 cyl. turbo engine to work on. I wish I would have yanked the turbo set up from it when I had the chance! But who would have guessed I'd be driving one? lol

Man! I thought you were the Pontiac expert around here! Ever heard of the Pontiac Firefly turbo? its the same body as the Metro and Swift! lol j/k

Total BS. My wife owned a 1990 Storm GSI and it was naturally aspirated @ 130 HP and 105TQ (not 102 TQ). 1991 engines were identical. 1992-1993 Storm GSI's bumped up to a 1.8 DOHC with 140HP like you said, but with 125TQ, not 120. There were no GSI's (not in America anyway, don' know if they were made anywhere else) that came factory turbo'd.
And there was no REV Limiter on our 1990 GSI. Redline began around 7700-7800. I used to spank Honda's around my area and I never shifted before 8K.

No, but it only cost about $25 for shipping. I had to send him a core and then about 8 weeks later he sent me back a completed head(shipping time sucks, that's what took it soo long to get there cause he will only accept shipping from the USPS).

The guy knows what he's doin though, that's for damn sure!! A local machine shop installed the stainless steel valves that are in my head now, and when they saw the work done to it(this shop does all of the machine work for the JoTech racing team) they were impressed!

I think you're thinking of the Suzuki Swift. Some came with a 4 cyl. turbo.

The Swift never had a 4 cylinder turbo in the US, only NA 1.3 SOHC, or NA 1.3 DOHC. And there was a turbo Storm GSI available in the US, I know, I had the opportunity to buy one, but didn't. They were AWD also.
