1996 Dodge Neon

Okay i was offered a 1996 Dodge neon (5 speed, YUSS) tonight for $500

There's a problem with one of the belts, that causes the engine to billow out smoke. You cant run the car for more than 30 seconds before this starts to happen.

I want to buy it but i want to pinpoint the problem before hand if anybody can help me out..i'd appreciate it

any ideas on which one? or what else it might be?

u mean a belt accessory is seized so the belt rubs on it and makes smoke?

Neon = Dodge = Bad.

I'm sorry, I have never ever seen one of those cars that old thats been in good condition. Everything else in its class is pretty much better. I'd invest in a huffy if you get it.

This coming from the J body crowd. We have head gasket and the famed "Dex Cool" issues. Sounds like the rings or the valve seats are gone. Do a compression test on all four cylinders.

yeah well me and my friend went and started it up to see what it might be

turned the key fired up........did a loud squeel and shut off

that was the end of that.

then i checked the coolant and there was none in the reserve tank but was some in the radiator.

he thought it might be the timing belt?

any other suggestions?

see, u had the answer in the first post. u just need to fix that.

coolant has nothing to do with a problem of squeeling. espec when its just on start up.

i would really love to know how this guy figures his car has 150 hp. with a performance chip, muffler, and turbonater. all of wich do absolutely nothing!

hey kyle, blow me you asshat

yeah thanks bortsy, i was just saying there was no coolant, (like a list of other things that might be wrong with it.)

i talked to a guy at a garage tonight and he said that there might be a problem with the pump to?

so i dont know, from what everybody's been tellin me this is starting to get expensive.

your friend is a retard then there arent such things as hidden pulleys

hit him with a stick.

just take it to a mechanic if your not mechanically inclined or have stupid ass friends who think they are.

i love when some doushbag that put an intake on his car on some rims tries to tell me @!#$ about cars. (not u, in real life) one of these days im going to snap and crack their skull.

once had a toolbag with a mustang try and tell me my heater control vavle was a thermostat.

The DOHC Neon's were rated at 150 HP from the factory. If there is a squealing, do this:
Borsty wrote:listen dude, take off the belt, find out which pulley doesnt move freely, or hard to move, or harder to move then the others, replace the accesory and your done.

And then, take note of this:
Borsty wrote:your friend is a retard then there arent such things as hidden pulleys

Proceed to do this:
Borsty wrote:hit him with a stick.

The power steering and AC compressor pulleys are on the front side of the engine, the alternator is buried on the back side, down below.

Friendly advice: Change the timing belt and water pump, replace the tensioner for the timng belt while you're at it. A broken belt will severely uck fup your engine.
