I've been driving DSMs for 9 years. Not at all a familiar sight.

What happened, ran lean on number 1? fouled injector? Too much boost (common)?

So I should stay away from this Talon? I was seriously thinking about buying it for 2 grand... I have wanted a turbo car for a while now... Notice how I even ask about maintenance in the thread.

I'm 35, and know my way around cars, especially how to not break them.

Two different DSMs the current on has a T28 and runs 19psi normally and 22lbs when I feel like a little extra pep. Still haven't had to pull the head, ever, on either. Sure I burn a clutch (wear item) and broke a release fork or two, but the internals are fine, compression is good, and it runs properly. Far too many people crank the boost and drive the crap out of DSMs without any fuel mods or even a basic understanding of how turbo cars should be tuned. That is the far bigger problem with DSMs. Wannabe gear-heads make messes of them all too often.

PS: I stopped drag racing when I knew the power from a good launch could damage the stock driveline. My fast vehicle runs 3 seconds faster than my talon anyway.. Yup, that's right, I'm in the 10s.. The bike, not the cars.

Havent had to pull the head on mine yet. The most involving maintenance i've had to do for the car was the timing belt/water pump, etc. I've had far less problems with my talon than I ever did with my cavalier.

the dsms are packed so tight

i like them cuz they're small and fast... but I don't envy you guys when you have to fix something...

I'll stick with my OHV and my supra... at least I can move in there a LITTLE bit

this is the 3rd time the heads been off. firs was the blown head with a broken vale and all effed up, also there was a hole in the number 1 piston when i got the car (not running). rebuilt it and for some odd reason the headgasket didnt seat right. proceded to remove the used/good head that replaced the effed one. replaced the headgasket. then one night while driving home the car just all of a sudden bogged down, i give it some gas and almost nothing. I pull off the next offramp and i dies on me and doesnt want to start. after plenty of diagnosis and weird symtoms a compression test came back with very very low numers (60 across). pulled the head took it to a machine shop and he says it has a little bit of warpage and the valves were really carboned up. friday i get the head back and i will be boosting again.

REDGOTE (ROBZ IL CAV): The big thing to worry about on these cars are the timing belt, and the trans if you abuse it allot. Keep up on the t-belt and that will be one of the few things you should really have to worry about. watch the oil good, keep up with changes, etc. the main thing is that working on these engines is "if you dont have time to do it right then you have time to do it again" so do it right or you will pay for it.

sorry i gatta agree with this dude, ive owned a few dsms and never had any prob....well, trans once, but that was my fault. my last talon was a 12 sec FWD, heard it broke 11.9 with the new owner, but its still going strong....dont beat the crap outta it and you wont have to fix it all the time.
