F-Body

I know there are some big F-Body nuts on here. I found a few forums but wanted to hear what you guys read. So where's a good F-body forum? I'm really in love with the LT-1 6-speed.

I found an 86 with a crate motor and a @!#$load of work done. Cams, exhaust, headers, gears and a ton more and they wanted 5,500. It had more then that in parts no doubt. Only had like 36,000 miles on it. Has receipts for everything.

Although, I really want a newer body style. I want to drive a 6-speed then an auto. I'm kinda thinking of auto for some reason. T-Tops are hot too. I've found a bunch of really nice ones in my price range.

My suggestion would be to talk to Borsty , because we all know he hates F Bodies .

I dont have any real questions on anything. Just wanna see what people are saying about them and the problems they are running in to.

After looking at even stock times people are pulling with an LT1. I need one real bad =P

I think Borsty is having his special time in the AG right now.

Re: F-Body

ive had no problems with my car at all...as for the T tops they dont leak unless i go threw the car wash that has the high pressure spray andit sprays it at the top of the window like were the window meets the T-top..even then its only like a drip or two...other than that i love my f body.

Re: F-Body

Ok, if i may chime in on this one....

the 85-90 Iroc-z's corner like nothing else i've ever driven. No matter what year F body you get, you're going to find more aftermarket support than you'll know what to do with..

If you do get a 3rd gen F body, make sure it has rear disc brakes...don't settle for anything less(unless it already has either a gm 12 bolt, or a ford 9 inch)....the 3rd gens with disc brakes have a Borg-Warner 9 bolt posi rear in them..a really good rear end as far as stock camaro's go. T tops are great(i've owned 2 cars with them), and mine never leaked... if you plan on making that car fast, put a 6 point roll cage in it so you won't have to worry about you t-tops leaking after the first day at the track.

You're going to want a 6 speed, a tremec T56 to be exact. The reason I say this, is mileage alone.. i get about 15-17 mpg city, and 30mph highway.. all because of 6th gear... I'm at 2200 rpms at 90 and the car has no problem climbing hills..(about 1500 rpms at 55)..oh, and the t56's are bulletproof..they'll wear the sync's out and bend the shift forks(from abuse, of course), but you'll still be able to shift..

.If you can find one with an LS1 or LT1 in it, then by all means, go for it (preforably an LS1(as they have 6 bolt main bearing and respond very well to mods(stock ls1's have made 80 hp on just a cam)) The LS1 motors also have 8 coil packs(1 per cylinder) The LS1 is also all aluminum(block and heads)..i think the LT1's have a cast iron block with aluminum heads, or vice versa. The LT1 will feel much more 'torquey' as the LS1 makes it's HP and Torque higher up in the rpm band(go to car max and test drive a few camaro's and t/a's and you'll see what i'm talking about.

the LT-1 has opti-spark, its sorta like an distrubiter, however it sits behind the water pump, also this was the first motor GM made with reverce flow cooling, ( the heads get coolent first.) The LT-1 is conventanal iron block with alium heads, ( "D" port exhaust ports.)
there is plently of suport for both platforms.

its sorta up to you what one you want to get, but a ls-1 with few mods will give most 600CC bikes a run for there money on the interstate.

My parents had a 85 IROC-Z w/350 and it hauled! Like East Coast said.....they handle really good. Not one problem with the car!

the the 94+ 6 speeds have CAGS. computer aided gear selection. it forces either a 1st to 4th or 2nd to 4th shift under normal acceleration. rk sport has a chip to get rid of it. autos are more consistant and alot easier to launch.. specially with that kinda power.

i thought it had a borg warner from some reason?

id listen to east coast beast though.. specially since hes got one.

i was watchin hotrod tv today and they had a newer ls1 and the put a different intake manifold, bigger throttle body and exhaust and got 360whp.. then they ran an 80 shot and got 440whp and then a 125 shot and got 460 something whp.

the 3rd gen will outhandle the 4th.

the one with more then 5500 in parts will most likely be faster then a stockish lt1, and probably last longer, be easier to work on, and larger aftermarket.

Better than the POS "corporate" 10-bolt. Trust me, don't settle for anything less than 3.23 gearing.

Pretty much all 3rd gens, not just the IROCs, are really good at handling, they are actually the best handling f-bodies besides the modern WS6 in the 4th gen TA's, and 3rd gens create the least amount of drag ever recorded by a GM lab.

You REALLY have to watch out though. Most people treat 3rd gens like crap and will not take care of them, and problems are easy to cover up.

A good idea would be to run the RPO codes found in the center console on that white sticker, if the sticker matches the VIn on the windshield then it'[s of good use, if it doesn't match, it doesn't do you much good. If you have to, print out a list of all the RPO codes and take them with you when you go and look at a car.

what he said ^^^^ even better buy a 12 bolt

Re: F-Body

9 bolts = Junk
10 bolts 7.5" = Junk
10 bolts 8.5" = Not so bad
12 bolts = AWESOME
9 inch = AWESOME

borg warner made the t5's i think...the t56's are made by tremec...and yes, a 3rd gen will outcorner a 4th gen...i never could get my front wheels to chirp around a turn in my 3rd gen...my 4th gen kinda understeers a bit, but i need new springs, so whatever..

If you can, go for a World Class T-5. Somewhat Rare.

9" Rear Ends are awesome, however, some people believe it's blasphemous to put a Ford part in their dear GM, I really don't care, but some people are weird like that.

I'm all about Chevy love, but some things have to be accepted...

We use Ford Rear Ends... and Cobra shift knobs on our LS1s...
And Ford uses just about whatever they can pry off our cars.
