Anybody had any experience with the Pontiac 2.5 (151) engines? I'm picking up a CJ this weekend that has one it. From what I understand they're a pretty good engine for a carbed 4 banger.

Tough sucker of an engine. There are better engines out there. GM sold the design to DC (Jeep) and they quicky got rid of it after a year or so. But I know guys with Jeeps and Fieros with the 2.5L and they are still running strong after 150k.
From what I understand main complaints....
Burns oil quite a bit
Problem with top end power (dies off, kinda like the 2.4L
)
Stock I.E. is very restrictive.
But like I said, it's a very hardy engine and just runs and runs and runs.
Very relaible, there was a SuperDuty version made like 250hp.

That's what I like to hear, I could care less about top end performance, this is gonna be a trail beater, And its a Jeep its supposed to leak

The beauty of it that it has no timing belts or timing chains it is driven by gears. Sweet!

What was that heavy duty version in, I doubt it was in the Jeeps since the duke was the standard engine. just curious though

we have one in our 91 s-10. The truck is all rotting around it but the motor will not die. My dad loves the truck and we hate it, and we want it to die so he will get a new vehicle but it wont. Not a smooth or quiet 4 cylinder thats for sure but it gets the name iron duke for a reason and that it lasts forever. Does have good low end torque for a 4 cylinder. I think i researched it a little and if i remember it was used to power big generators and then gm used it in their vehicles.
i've got the good ol' duke in my '86 century with 240k miles on it. still runs. only running on 3 cylinders right now, but it still gets around town. one hell of an engine. u sure it's carbed? they came with throttle body injection in buicks and pontiacs in... eh, dunno what year, but it gets most people fooled until they take a closer look and realize that it's not a carb. anyway, good engine, have fun. long live the iron duke!

275k on the one in my 89 buick century winter beater. only things that have gone wrong so far with the car since i bought it 4 years ago were the brakes fell off after first moving it (had been sitting for 3+ months), muffler rusted off, alternator bearings blew out, and now it rusted through in front of the cat. other then that no problems what so ever. well besides the rest of the car rusting apart.
only down side of the 2.5l iron duke is that it only puts out 86hp at the crank.

wow, nice buy man. CJ's are just too sweet. When I get some time, I need to snap some pics of the CJ my friends and I are working on.

I've owned 5 vehicles with Iron Dukes, they are slow as death but pretty damn reliable.
had one in my old chev citation 2
low end was great
the hwy was too funny (gut less)
My parents used to have a century with the iron duke and it went forever.. last i remember it was 450+kms, got rid of it 2 years ago or so.
I picked it up on Ebay of all places, a guy in Maryland had it up. The bed floor is pretty much gone, so I'll probably get some steel and replace the whole thing, Rockers are rotted out too, so some patching, bondo and painting and probably some aftermarket armoured rockers will fix that
Just needs a bikini top and its good to go. Its all stock and original equipment so it'll be awhile before its ready for serious trails but it'll be fun to take up easy stuff in the meantime.

2k, may seem like a lot but these are very rare jeeps, and other than the rust issues its in good shape. Talking to the guy I'm thinking it was a street queen he never took it offroad so that's good.
