Full-Size Pickup Trucks
Thursday, May 19, 2005 2:42 PM
I'm seriously considering buying either a Ford F150 or a Chevy Silverado because some dealers in the area have some killer prices on both of them right now.

What I'm basically looking for is you guys to tell me why I should get one. I guess I need justification for trading in a sporty economy car for a full size pickup truck.

BTW, I live in Indiana and I own my own home. I know that hauling crap for my house is a good reason for getting one, I just want more

Thanks!

Room is a big one, I love all the room that I have to move around and get comfortable in my Durango. The seats will be more comfortable, especially for long hauls, don't expect a lot of side bolstering, or anything like that, but trucks are designed to be used for long periods of time and the seats are the same way. A 4wd is great for the winter, but FWD is just as good if you know what you're doing, there really isn't many more reasons, trucks are designed to be used, if you're not gonna use a pick-up to haul stuff then there really isn't a reason to have one. I personally believe that every home owner should have at least one truck because they never know when they're gonna need to haul stuff, but that's the only reason, why I feel that way.

Ford can build a hell of a truck, but give me a Dodge over a Ford anyday. If you watch the whole Truth about Trucks deal, they don't compare the F-150 to the Ram almost at all, that should tell you something. There is no group of Auto owners that are more loyal then pick-up truck owners, and whatever truck that person owns is what they're going to recommend, but the Chevy is a disappointment, and Dodge is right up there with the F-150 especially when the next Generation Ram comes out. Remember, with the exception of the Titan, Ford had 2 more years of develpoment over the next newest competitor. I'm not dogging the F-150 at all it's an awesome truck, just pointing some things out

I believe that as well. That's why I'm looking into them. My boyfriend won't drive anything bigger than his Ford Tempo, so I'll be the one driving the big boy if we do decide to get one.

Thanks for the link, Paul, I'm going to sit down and watch all of it later.

I think I'm going to go look at F150s tomorrow.

Any other comments are welcome Thanks for the ones so far.

Couldn't of thought of a better time to get full size truck huh? Have you been to gas station lately?
Besides the point.
Between the F150 and Silverado. I would strongly say the Silverado.
You have a lighter truck, which wastes less fuel then the F150. Reliabilty is so-so on Ford trucks with all these engine fire recalls as of late. Yes, they don't pertain to the new one, but it only makes you wonder.
Trade in values it is said to be better on Chevys.
I have done a comparison test back to back tests last year between Ram, Silverado,Tundra, F-150. The one that surprised me the most was the Ram in braking and throttle response. Handling went to the Tundra. Refinement - smoothness, went the Silverado. F-150 had the best ergonomics and best view out and it was agile.

If you want I can give you a full details, but that was in a nutshell
BTW, have you checked Nissan Titans?

i do not have experience with the chevys but my advice would be to drive both first. my work truck is an 04 f150 4.6 2wd. everything about the truck is better than the previous body style except the drive by wire. on the hwy when your stuck in traffic or whatever and you try to switch lanes to moving traffic and need to pick up speed quick, it doesnt go. between the hesitation in the electronic throttle and the time it takes for the tranny to downshift. it literally takes 5 secs. ive almost wrecked the truck a couple times now because it takes so long. the first time it happened i did not expect such a long hesitation . since then ive tried to compensate by acc. earlier but it still sucks really bad.

id say get the silverado....my uncles has had two of them, both he uses for his busniess and they get worked, neither has had any significant problems, there tough trucks

Re: Full-Size Pickup Trucks

I use to work at an exhaust pros/ performance shop and we did alot of trucks exhaust I got to see and drive alot of different trucks too. I personally don't like driving them because I'm a little guy 5ft 8 120lbs hence the name skinnye. But the best sounding one is the titan, If I could get a truck overall though it would have to be either a duramax turbo diesal, or a cummins because of the power for the $ and the fact that they get decent gas mileage. If I was buying a new gasonline truck I would get the new hybrid silvarado its a good setup and gets good mpg while still staying like a truck.

The nissan titan is by far the best truck on the market at the moment, nothing even comes close. Next in line would probably be the new f150 which is also a respectable truck. The silverado isn't a bad truck but it's just getting very dated
Re: Full-Size Pickup Trucks

We had 2 2500HD silverados with the 8.1 in em.. got worked and not 1 thing ever went wrong in the 2 years I was there. Nice trucks! specially with the 8.1 but talk about gas guzzler holy @!#$. Have no experience with the other companies but never liked rams...

Re: Full-Size Pickup Trucks

i actualyl really was considering a dodge before i chose my f150 but only thing that turned me off in the dodge was lack of luxory...i mean they are great for work trucks, but for somethin im gonna sit in every day, hell no....they dont offer my to comfort you, my truck is more like driving a luxory car...with a huge trunk...its got everything you need, leather seats, heated...power everything...sunroof/rearwindow ect... 6 disc cd changer with sub under the rear seat...you name it, it has it... also about the throttle by wire, if you go to the dealer and tell them about your hesitation problem, they will reflash the computer with a newer flash that will resolve that issue, or you can just get a supertuner like i did and it really solved the problem and makes the truck go a lot nicer

no offence, but that was on a 2001(?) i think model year truck...and has been fixed already (all the new parts are in an warranty work is being completed now) so how can you say "all these engine fire recalls" especially when it was from a faulty part from another manufacturer that caused it...and about comparing the f150 to the other trucks, i dunno what you where testing but ive tested a bunch and all the rest felt like you where driving a "truck" the f150 felt more like you where driving a nice SUV with a bed on the back...doesnt feel like your driving a 6k pound truck, and if you have a truck, mpg dont mean @!#$, especially if its a 1mpg difference between silverado/f150.... anyway, erika if you got any questions let me know...ive learned a lot since august lol

Sounds to me like you want a truck, but don't necessarily have a need for one.
If that's the case, I'd check out a small or midsize truck instead of shelling out cash for gas every 5 minutes. Prolly the best all around small trucks out right now are the new Tacoma, Dakota, and Colorado.

Granted and ofcourse you will defend the F150. It is not a bad truck, nor is it the best. Yes, it is the best selling vehicle, but that does not mean it is the best. It means that Ford knows how to get good deals in order to get you in one. Hence is how Erica is seeing good deals on these now.
The recall may not be a "Ford product" but Ford uses it. Ford is supposed to use their R&D and prevent things like this from happening. Thats the point and Ford neglected that. Ford has through out its history has had nasty habit of issues namely safety issue from the 1964-1/2+ Mustang, to the Pinto, to the Crown Vics, to the Explorer, to the Expedition-Navigator, to now the F150, so which model is next in line?

Or tested was conducted with my team of four. We did a run of about 400 hwy miles to test comfort, MPG, stability, and ease of use. Later on went and took it through our road course, where we set some cones on some equipment to test out its handling, stopping, accelerations.
All tested were, top V8s, ext-cab, automatic, 2WD. The one surprised us most was the Ram with its quick response steering, throttle, brakes. We did not like was the MPG which we got 12 real-world mpg on our test and step in height was the highest. Chevrolet was the most nimble, quietest, refined and with the best MPG of the bunch, we got 17 real world mpg on out test. But the dash design looks like from a Chevy Citation and brakes "felt" as it slows the truck instead of actually stopping it. The F150 was the newest and it was a quantum leap over the previous version. Good thing was it braked a little better then the Chevy, but 5.4Ls struggled to move the truck, especially when you wanted to pass someone on the hwy. At speeds, I heard wind noise, which the other did not have. Inside ergonomics were the best, but plastics were not any better then the Dodge and especially Toyota. We got 14 real world mpg with this truck. Toyota, was strong it was quick of the line, but when on the hwy, Toyota struggled to keep up with the others. Brakes was a tie with Ram, which ofcourse the Tundra is the lightest here. Being that, it handled the best. Inside was the most car-like, it felt like a Camry, but the ergonomics was still better on the F150. We got 16 real world mpg.

Again, a quick synopsis. As Silverado ages, it still does not fall to far behind of the new comers, and atleast you do not have to worry about your truck catching on fire. Erica, if you must have a truck, I would hold of another year and wait on the all new Silverado, from the talks around the office, it is supposed to have fixed its interior, it gets new engines, updated chassis and brakes, evolution design of the current one and a better hybrid. Both are good, its just the Chevy you have more peace of mind.

Sounds like we've got a lot in common! You probably already know, but Jonathan and i were also sick of not being able to move things by ourself with having the house, so we went bigger with an Outback. It has 36.5 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 69.9 cubic feet with the rear seats down. It has more ground clearance than a car, can tow 2000 lbs. and of course AWD. It gets better gas mileage than a truck or suv & rides like a car rather than a truck or SUV. Maybe you could check into something like this rather than a big truck so that both you and your boyfriend would be alright driving it. They're also very cushy with options!

On the other hand, big trucks ARE fun to drive! I personally would check out the Titan for sure after hearing so much good about it. I can't remember hearing anything negative about it anywhere.

Re: Full-Size Pickup Trucks

apparently mr goodwrench didnt test a real f150
my dads f150 is the quietest thing with the windows up, its almost sickening
and it certainly can pass easily on the highway if need be
btw he has the long bed crew cab 4x4 (the 4 doors but the ones with the handles on the inside)
ill hafta ask what he gets for gas mileage, im sure its nothing special.

and if youre gonna bring the tire recall into this, thats retarded
it happened to some vehicles, yes, but that as the tire manufacturers supplying crappy tires
theres no way ford can test every single set of tires to go on their vehicles

Re: Full-Size Pickup Trucks

Well both trucks have their own distinct advantages, but personally I would go with the Silverado over the F-150.

I've had experience with both, and the Silverado is still one of the best trucks on the market, even if it's starting to show its age. it does everything well, and its only weak point is its interior - and thats not because its "bad", in fact its very functional and ergonomic - the problem is that the quality of materials isn't the greatest, and its not very attractive - too much shiny black plastic.

Other than that though, the Silverado rides comfortably, has plenty of power (much better than the F-150), handles competently, tows with ease, and gets very respectable fuel mileage.

The OHC Ford engines don't have as much low-end grunt as the Chevy OHV's, and they F-150 has a lot more weight to pull around. Ford really went all out with the new model - the new F-150 is freakin huge, and its built like a tank - but unfortunately they went a little overboard, and the truck's weight suffers the consequences. Optioned out models can creep towards 6,000lbs, which is a lot if weight for a light duty pickup truck. Acceleration, handling, and braking are nothing special for a brand-new for 2005 truck.

I'd say if you're looking for a do-it-all well pickup truck that still rides well and is civilized enough for long trips, go with the Silverado. If you can wait another year and a half, the new 2007 Silverado's will be out, and they will easily surpass all of the competition in every category.

If you like the looks of the F-150 and don't mind the extra size and mass, you might want to consider it over the Silverado just because its more refined and has a nicer interior.

Check them both out in person, go for a couple test drives, and then make your decision

If u really want to get a truck. the choice is yours try both. They both have good reviews.
I personally prefer the Chevy. I work with a lot of contractors and 80% of them have Chevy trucks. .

I have been a home owner for a while and i know a number of people that have home. I personally do not want to get a truck. With the amount of places that deliver for free. Lowes and home depot have trucks you can use to bring stuff to your house. Not really worth the insurance and gas for me personally Plus i get along well with my boss and we have 3 trucks at work i can use when i want to.

Toyota and Nissan are the best right now...but they also cost the most. The real ? is how much do you want to spend? You can find silverado's at a decent price and they hold their value extremely well. I like the new F-150 (like Pauls) but I don't like the older ones. Dodge....well.....I wouldn't even consider one.... but thats just me.
