alright with my car starting to fail and my interest being lost due to squeeking rattling, serious replacement of some expensive parts... and a bit of rust startng to set in, i think it may be time for an upgrade.
two options for this planned upgrade.
another J
not another J
my explanation and candidates.
My neighbors have a 98 Z vert for sale, it is in rather good condition, and im confident i can swap most of my car over to it. how much do you think i should offer? it has the honeycomb mesh wheels. victory red paint in decent condition, new top and i havent seen the inside so i cant say if its anything special or not. im assuming its an automatic but again i have not looked.
my other options
Cobalt SS S/C i want to get one so badly. they would obviously be more to insure and have a higher initial cost. but with the 07's and their 5y/100K mile warranty assuming GM stays afloat this is another option. looking at a black 06 S/C model with G85 package OR a yellow 06 S/C non G85
third option
Hyundai Tiburon SE v6.
i hate to say it, but hyundai has been working their asses off and have designed some pretty amazing cars for such a low price. sure they have problems, and hyundai is sort of a newcomer to the real car world, but the tiburon is just so sexy, v6 power, nice little coupe with plenty of room to haul my school crap and travel.
fourth option. suggestions within the same price range? between 5K and 16K is my goal.
i would prefer, newer model year, 5/6speed manual, sunroof if possible, ability to mod the car tastefully with decent aftermarket support. NO V8. i travel to much to afford the gas
I loved my z24 convertible, but I say got with a Cobalt SS S/c.
I love my 03 Cavalier LSS, but I'm still kicking myself I didn't just get a Cobalt SS S/c. They're a lot of fun to drive.

thats quite the range you have there
Big price difference between a 98 cav and the other choices. If you feel like having a car payment go with the ss/sc. Sounds like you're tired of having a j body, so whats going to be different about this 98 convertible?
Id much rather have the Tiburon than Cobalt SS but if you want to save some money just pick up an 03-05 J-body
would love a WRX insurance though
ss/sc .... easy 13 sec car...... has an amazing handling looks good nice stock 18's, interior is good....all u need
7 Speaker Pioneer system w/ 10" subwoofer
------------------------------------------------------------------
13.964@102.7
Cobalt SS/SC
07 - VICTORY RED - LSD - GM STAGE 2 - I/H/DP - SPORTLINES -
260whp 241wtq
i would get the cobalt ss/sc the tibby may look nicer but the V6 in it is slower then the 2.4l in the ss na cobalts.
I ended up trading my J in for a 2005 SRT-4 ACR

Best thing I ever did, newer car, better suspension and factory turbo. Ive had it for 3 months now, no regrets.....
I was considering a Cobalt SS but the SRT is easier to upgrade and higher overall potential..... you dont even have to upgrade the internals until over 400hp.

insurance on these are very affordable. mine costs all of $43 every 6 months more than my jbody did. so im going to have to agree go with a wrx
i like the SRT4 but a bunch of my friends already have them. dont get me wrong, they are nasty cars when trickd out right.
the subaru would be awesome to have, its just if i get down the nit picky with them, most likely i wont be able to find one "up to my standards" from the older years.
the cobalt SS/SC sounds great and im deadset on getting one, but if i cant find them lower than about 14K ill probably pass for a little bit.
maybe this would help, a list of cars my friends who i hang out with a lot,
2 RSX's -type S and K24 fully built.
3 Subarus- silver WRX 04, tan 07 STi, black 05 STi
5 Civics- flat black EG turbo GSR motor, Red EG LS swap, Teal EK, 08 mugen Si, 99Teg
3 Mustangs- 04 Cobra, 04 Mach 1, 05 GT.
3 SRT4's -blue(422whp), red(378whp), silver(528whp)
2 EVOS- silver(500+hp), black(wide body...etc...)
1 08 nissan GTR -- black stock
1 Lotus Exige -S tricked out.
1 RX-7 LS1 swap
2 Eclipse Turbos (99~GST and, 06 turboed)
1 04 Tiburon, kitted, lambo doors
1 BMW (88 325vert)
1 350Z TT
ETC.
trying to get something a bit unique from those guys, obviously the cavalier fits that, but when we hit I95 or 695 in MD its pretty difficult for a 2200 automatic cavalier to keep up.
not trying to run anything ridiculous like the higher end cars, but i would like to "fit in" with the group rather than being where i am now.
* i really do like my J, but somewhere along the way i @!#$ up my plans for it and ended up in halfass land.
because of my long trips along I-95 i need a car which will get decent mileage and rather than put more and more money into fixing my cav, then going along with the plans i really wanted in the first place, i think it would be easier to get a new car and part mine out, then sell its stock remains, or find someone looking for a decently done project.
i think i have put way to much thought into what i meant to say and ended up piling a useless load of crap into this post, so feel free to pick at it. haha
Ion redline. They are different, and are usually cheaper than the cobalt. 16k is getting close to used 350z and g35 area. Maybe a used mini cooper S.
2004 Cavalier. Razzi. (Sold)
1998 Corvette. Some mods.
1992 Typhoon. Lots of mods.
1994 Civic VX 44MPG
lol i love the redlines, BUT i dont ever want to own a car with the offset gauges it drives me crazy.
g35 is also a possibility. i rule out the Z for the most part because of space. i carry lots of stuff between myrtle beach(college) and home (maryland) so i need to have plenty of space to bring lots of crap. i really havent looked into cargo room in the Z vs the cavalier. but im pretty certain that the cavalier wins on that. lol
g35... hmmm maybe they will come down a little bit over the next 6 months due to the G37 being out, and the 370Z being released hopefully soon.
cobalt ss man, i love mine's i get 34mpg combine city and highway...and can i still have the power i need when i need it. if that makes any sense lol.
Now Boosted no more N/A

hmmm
now i got that WRX on my mind
current top 4
WRX
Cobalt SS/SC
G35 if i can find it
03-04 accord coupe v6 6speed
you won't be disappointed with a wrx. i LOVE my bugeye.
i can see that lol. i would probably never take it through mud or anything because im ridiculous about keeping my cars spotless... but i would take it down a dirt trail once in a while, or something to keep its heritage alive. lol
03-05 Corolla XRS. All the goodness of a Celica GT-S without the shouty exterior. Think about it - disc brakes all around, 6 speed trans, 8400 RPM redline, roomy interior (for it's class at least), four door insurance, Toyota reliability. It's lighter, faster and uses less gas than a Tibuwrong, too. Also much better than the tC clone that is the new XRS.
2010 Honda Fit LX
1. Why are you and your friends driving on I-95 or 695 in a manner that your 2200 "keeping up" would be an issue? Grow up and drive like adults.
2. Actual suggestions, and in the order that I would consider them:
-02-04 Subaru WRX
-Audi S4(should be able to find a B5 or B6 in your price range easily)
-Audi A4( A step down from the S, so you should be able to find a newer lower mileage one for the same price as an S4 of similar price)
-Dodge (neon[yeah you fan boys can suck it up and not cry that I called it a neon])SRT-4(watch out for some surprisingly high insurance though)
-94-98 Mustang Cobra(seriously, you will be surprised about gas mileage)
-99-04 Mustang GT(again, don't rule out a V8. I can get 25mpg out of my built NA GT)
-Volkswagen Golf GTI
-Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Just my input. But like it was already said, those V6 Tibbys are pigs, you are getting OUT of the J scene, might as well upgrade rather than get another one, and the SS/SC never apealed to me looks, refinement, or comfort wise.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.
In my family we teach that boys have a God-stick and girls have a Shame Cave. -John Stewart
if you get a g35, please do not get it in automatic.

thanks for the coment i figured someone would try and flame me for that after i posted it. but i assumed because of my following on your "speeding on roads and racing is bad" posts that you would overlook it,
i do not race on roads, hell i dont race my car at all, but simple things such as merging, and keeping up with cars of that sort with a sloppy old 3 speed trans and my cavalier.... i dont like hammering on the gas, therefore i do not hammer on the gas.
