What happend? Here is
vid of what happend.
On July 23, 2006, she was en route from Japan to Vancouver, British Columbia; Tacoma, Washington; and Port Hueneme, California, with a cargo of 4,812 vehicles. During a transfer of ballast water, she lost stability and developed an 60-degree list to port. There were reports of a large wave striking the vessel during the ballast transfer, but it is unknown what effect this had on her loss of stability. On July 24, the United States Coast Guard successfully rescued the 23 crew members.
4,703 of the vehicles were Mazdas, with about 60% of these being the 2007 Mazda 3s and 30% being Mazda CX-7 crossover SUVs. The remaining Mazdas were RX-8s and MX-5s. About 100 of the vehicles were not Mazdas, but the exact make of those has not been disclosed. They are said to be valued at US$117 million. Later Mitsui OSK scrapped all vehicles that were onboard the vessel during the incident.

wow thats such a waist... Why wouldn't they re use lot of the parts... hell I could list of lots of parts that would still be good
- rims and tires
- brake rotors / pads
- lights
- body panels
- lot of interior pieces
there really is not much you couldn't use. Even if they went under water there are lots of parts that Mazda could still use.

I would assume if the insurance paid for the loss all parts have to be destroyed. If parts were kept and sold or reused it would be insurance fraud.

It is not a matter of Mazda taking the items and putting them up FS on a site like the JBO.
There was a cost analysis that went into their decision ... Salvaging everything. Inventory. Storage. Going through it all again. Taking it apart. The Selling process.
Or they could just out source it. But, why? Insurance is cutting them a nice cheque for the value of the vehicles ... cash in hand ... walk away ...
If you read the story in the original post, the reason Mazda decided to scrap the cars was because the cars were all laying on their sides for quite a long time. Mazda wasn't sure if this would impact the cars or not, and instead of putting up with warranty BS, they decided to scrap them all and let the insurance cut them a cheque.

Thats what I just said, rofl.
Cost - Benefit analysis ... Mazda took the cheque ...
They were also concerned about their reputation had these cars been sold and many turned out to be lemons it makes them look bad.
Even if people are warned and get a great deal they forget quickly when they start having problems
