allright here's the deal i recently got my hands on a great project a 76 camaro. the car is overall in good shape for being how old it is and not being on the road since 97. the 350 runs strong turns over dosent burn any oil but has a lazy lifter. im thinking of swapping it with a buddy's extra 400 small block he's got in a parts 76 trans am. only issue is i know with a lil $$ the 350 can be very potent with a stroker kit. but im being told to go with the 400 for more powere only issue i have with that is having to move the motor mounts literally mm's then having to tack them back in the 400 is great it's got racing valve train cams and a summit crank. but like i said b4 the 350 can be just as potent with sum time and $ either online or @ a swap what would u guys do in this situation??? btw for any of you that are like what the hell dose a 76 camaro look like it's the camaro from transformers.
that 400 is a pontiac motor. GM diddnt go to corprate motors util the 80's
just about everything on that motor is different then the chevy and parts for thechevyare cheaper andmore plentiful

I dont know how you would know its a pontiac 400 vs. a chevy 400.
Since he says "400sb" I would have quessed he meant chev.
If its a chevy 400, then you won't need to move anything all. Everything from the 350 will bolt right on and the mounts are exactly the same and same location.
The only real issue if it is supposed to be a 400 chevy is whether it really is.
All SB chevys: 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400, look basically exactly the same from the outside and there are a lot of 130hp 305s that are claimed to be 350s or 400s either because or simple stupidity or outright fraud.

giveaways of a pontiac motor vs a chevy.
smaller valve covers that are rounded at the edges opposed to chevys rectangle design
timing chain/water pump area is COMPLETELY different
many pontiacs, especially high performance editions, had a raised intake manifold similar to edelbrocks "air gap" design
and I am pretty sure the feul pump is attached to the timing chain cover as opposed to being attached to the block on the chevy motor.
if it actually is a chevy block, check the flywheel and the balancer. from the factory all 400's were externally balanced. so on the harmonic balncer there will be an obviouse counterweight as opposed the the 350 and smaller balancer. you can also check they flywheel. the 400 will have balance weights on it and will have either 62 or 64 teeth as opposed to the 58 teeth of all other chevy flywheels.
a 400 chevy can be easy power and torq becouse of its displacement. however, if you plan on going over 400hp, I would biuld the 350. becouse of its 4.125 bore the block is weaker and are known for overheating and cracking at extremely high horsepower levels. also, mose 400's were only 2 bolt main. also, most 400's were used in larger non performance cars so the stock heads are crap, most will have low compression, and all will come with baby cams.

except for that 62/64/58 teeth thing... those would be some mighty huge teeth there. Next time try adding a hundred...
Yet I fail to see how any of that helped you to determine he has a pontiac motor based on the info in his post.
Do you have some sort of ultra secret .org membership that lets you see pictures in a post that no one else can ever see????

Mix them, stroke the 350 to a 383 with the 400 or destroke the 400 with the 350 and make a 377
oh yeah, its 168 tooth, just looked it up
and I am 99% sure he has a poncho motor without seeing pics becouse he said he was pulling out of a 76 firebird

nice n guys it's a 400 small block pontiac sorry forgot to mention that it's coming out of a 76 trans am that has some decent valtrain,crank and pully upgrades i was thinkin of keepin the 350 swapping the crank and actually makin a 383 stroker seeing how we can mix and match some parts. but i wil ldefinatly go with the 383 stoker thanx guys for the help.
Pontiac never made a small block, or a big block. All the Pontiac engines are a in-between/medium block.

Pontiac engines and Chevy engines are completely different. You cannot mix parts.
A 383 is made with parts from a 350 chevy and a 400 CHEVY.
You can't use PONTIAC parts in a CHEVY engine.
If he has a pontiac, it is not a small block. All Pontiacs used similar size block so there is no big/small.
Chevy had 2 block families one physically smaller and one larger. Hence the terms small block (262-400) and big block (396-572)

if youare going for rerasonable power for a lower cost i would personaly just keep and build the 350.

Also, the small block 400 has 3 freeze plugs per side, any other chevy small block has 2.

yeah, I always thought it was funny that pontiac went from sub 301ci all the way to 455ci on basically the same block.
(correct me if I am wrong but I belive the 428 and 455 had taller decks and larger main bearing journals, other than that the same block)
