hey everyone...
took a quick glance over the first page and didnt see this yet, maybe i missed it.
i work in a tire shop, we subscribe to a paper called "tire news"
on the second page there was an article in regardes to the Pontiac GTO.
apparently there is a class action against GM over the tires on this vehicle.
the just of the article was that the tires are too big and rub on the strut/suspension component under the car and cause uneven/premature tire wear and even tire failure. so far 7 vehicles have expirienced tire failure with 1 of those leadin to an accident (if i remember correctly).
basically, the tires on the GTO are 245's. the GTO is built on a Holden platform that only has 235's on it. pretty much they said GM wanted it to look more "macho" and tossed on bigger tires.
here is the link i have found so far on the GTO
Class Action.
here is pretty much the same
article.
just thought i would spread the word, see what everyone thought.

I don't understand. If all the GTO's came with this kind of tire, wouldn't it create this problem on ALL the vehicles then? I don't understand how only 7 issues could be reported if this was the norm for all GTOs.

its a lot more then 7 issues with this problem... just most people realize the uneven wear well before the tire blows to bits....if i remember correctly its mainly an issue with the 04 model.
basically the issue with the car is old news
there was alot more than 7 issues.
there was only 7 tire failures, which is way the law suit also claims uneven and premature tire wear as well. if they only claimed the 7 failures, the judge would toss this thing out pretty quickly.

That's a pretty small class, even if its the entire lot of 2004 model owners.
The payout in the event of finding for plaintiffs MIGHT be enough to cover replacement tires. Due to the fact that there's only one accident and 7 failures (Unlike the Firestone/Explod... uhh.. Explorer) I really don't see a big problem or likelihood of punitive damages.
If GM has to pay to get the tires and stickers switched to read 235 width tires, this will just be a blip on the radar.
the funny thing is, GM has apparently made a comment on this. the comment hasnt been found yet though. they make all their comments on stuff like this through the NHTSA. the comment was sent a fair while back and the NHTSA hasnt posted it up yet.

i noticed it not too long after i bought mine that the outside of the rear tires were fine but inside were completly destroyed and almost ready to blow. i had them replaced, but they still are 245/45/17 so we'll see if it happens again.

Wow this is freaky. you would think all the bad press Firestone and Ford got GM would want to nip this and have it fixed asap instead of letting a class action go public. Whats so different about the 2005 and on ones that this isn't a problem? they should just do a recall and fix it with 05 and up parts it would save them more $$$ than paying a suit and a costly PR disaster (we ALL know the press loves to pounce on GM)

My friend has a 04 he got in 04, they replaced his tires for free.
It seems any real GTO owner found out about this problem and got it taken care of.

How many steps to heaven, Doc?
...Ah, metaphysics.
Strut Rub Issues the 04's came over on the boat and got out of alignment which caused the inside of the front tires to rub againt the bottom of the strut assembly having a properly done alignment fixes the issue if you catch it early enough.
And here I am getting ready to look into a decent used GTO. Meh, if it is how it seems, Im not scared. If tire size or something as simple as an alignment fixes this one minor recall type issue, it wont sway my choice. good to know though.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

the strut rub is on all 04-06 , some have caught it before it did major damage
its mostly the 17's , nut some 18's are doing it , alot is corrected with a alignment
also alot change the wheels , and with the offsets pushing the wheel towards the outside , which moves then away from the strut
