hey whats up guys, a guy on the RSX forum i belong to is selling a 2005 RSX-S that has a Rebuild title, this is what the guy said about the damage that was on the car be fore it was repaired by a professional shop
Quote:
the damage was on the left side i had to buy a new door, fender, and side skirt, and the roof had some dents in it which was fixed... The engine was not touched from the accident and runs very nice and smooth
car looks really clean and has only 24 thousand miles on it. he was asking $14k for it but says he will go lower, but how much idk... what do you think is a good price to offer him for something like this?

let me know what you guys think or if i should stay away.. im seriously having a problem finding a decent RSX-S around where i live in RI and MA.. this guys lives 6 hours away but i think if i can get a good enough deal on the car it might be worth the drive idk
I would always watch out for cars like this. The rsx is a great machine, but I always tend to worry about a cars chassis condition after a collision, how straight it is etc. I'd save a little longer and get a more solid foundation to start, you'll thank yourself later and not have little things on the back of your mind.
Hope you do find the rsx for you though, great cars!
I'd bid a ham and swiss cheese sammich.
If you need to, bid some coleslaw, then fries... and hold back the drink (NOT DRANK!!!) until you get the cool shift knob.

If its straight, its a good buy
. Look all around for any signs of stress or fractures.

talk to the guy and ask what point on the car was damamged, like front frame horns, rear and so on. then check for signs of stress on the "new" welds, where the frame was repainted. There is nothing wrong w/ buying a car w/ a salvage title as long as it's done correctly. My J was a total, i've rebuilt a few totaled cars and my dad's done it for 30 years. just make sure the work was done correctly and by whom it was done. good luck man

when ever you do a walk around assesment and value qoute on kelly blue book online the second you check the (salvaged title) box the entire thing stops and the tell you the car is valueless. I know a guy here in burbank, in like 2004 that had a 2002 civic si coupe. it was really nice, but he wanted $2000 more than the car was worth and highlighed that price was firm. But also listed the car as a salvaged title. why he would think a salvaged car would be worth more than a clean titled car is beyond me. but long story short the car is still for sale today, 3 years later. he still wants $8000 for it, i think he is retarded.

No more used cars for me.
Get the Yaris you were talking about.
How many steps to heaven, Doc?
...Ah, metaphysics.
Unless your state has frame repair standard inspections, do what Jinxed said.
Or... do what I said...

He speaks the truth.
Hopefully this is an eye opener, please watch.
X2 if there was damage to the roof as the seller claims. the post would have to be pushed in pretty far and probably hit high up by a pick up truck or SUV. small cars hit in the door by another small car are usually hit low and there is major damage to the rocker and floor pan. but if it was repaired properly it will be hard to tell how much damage there really was.
as for the video, theres 1000's of cars like that around. we sell total loss cars at work for the insurance companys, and approx 40% of them are sold to dealers and rebuilt. sometimes they rebuild them and bring them back to us to sell at auction. these cars are total S#$% there hammered out, full of bondo and so poorly repaired that you can spot them across the parking lot. even the ones that look really nice have serious hidden damage. maybe 1 out of every 200 i see is repaired properly.
i once saw an 05 civic that was in a rollover the only new parts on it where the back window and windshield. the rest of the car was bondo. the filler on the roof was almost 2 inches thick. also saw a Lexus IS 300 that was still so mangled that it looked like it was still totalled. the rad support was kinda pulled out then they put new sheet metal on, that was one sad looking car.
be careful buying a rebuilt car man, you don't want to end up like the driver of the silver Focus.

thanks for the insite guys i guess i wont ever look into any rebuild titled cars again after seeing that vid lol
i just wish there where more RSX-S in my area for a reasonable price dealer ships still want like 24k for a 05 with 30k miles on the car... thats insane if you ask me
im bumming because this is the car i want. my only other consideration at this point is to get a brand new Scion Tc with TRD springs and suspension but i hear the TC's rattle a bit and thats exactly what im trying to get away from on my T/A
thanks again guys for all your input
I really dont get why people have such a fit over rebuilt cars
Every one of my cars have had a salvage title........ my current car had a salvage title..... the only thing wrong with it was the lower rad support was busted up, and bent the front of the frame over a little bit. On top of that had a bunch of dents down the passenger side.
You would never be able to tell now that it was wrecked at one point. Salvage titled cars can be awesome buys....... but you do need to go over them carefully and do your homework. Ive always got salvaged cars and fixed them myself.
A friend of mine just bought a 2001 BMW 325xi with an R-title. It needed a front bumper, fender, and hood. I'm sure there was some fanangeling (?) of the body underneath that needed to be done, but nothing like bent frame rails or anything. He got it for $9000, which I'd say is a pretty good deal since the rest of the car is basically brand new (and the guy who rebuilt the car is a good friend of his). I think that Mr. Meck is right, salvage cars can be a great deal, but you just have to be extra careful when you pick one out.
to be a total loss the car had to sustain more damage cost than the value of the car. If a clean titled RSX like that runs about $15,000 at dealers usually. How friggin damage did that car have for it to be a total loss? More than $15,000 worth? I think something is fishy about that. What's really fishy is he posted that add on Club RSX on April 25th 2007 and said he's selling it because he just had foot surgery and can't drive it for 7 weeks. 7 weeks was up in early June, It's September and he's still selling it why?
*fishy*
I'm guessing he's selling it because he didn't research it well enough and found out the hard way it's a peice of junk. Now he wants to get a rid of it and make it somebody elses problem. Secondly it's not selling because i'm guessing Club RSX people are not dumb enough to give him $14,000 on a salvaged car that's really valueless and realisticlly is only worth about $8000 or less. He'll never sell it asking that much for a car he seems a bit desperate to sell, which i think is a big red flag that the car MUST have problems.
Keep that in mind.

just thought i would throw in that evol is full of bs when it comes to what it takes to have a car considered a total loss...you only need around 55-60% worth of the cars value in repairs to have it totaled. although he does make some good points on something is fishy with the add being up for so long and it not selling, so ill give him that.. btw the value of that car would be around 18-19k if it wasn't a rebuild.
im not even considering it anymore
thanks again guys for all the input
Your right, my bad...i don't think was was nessecary to say i'm full of bs. Because i'm not in a used car 5 years or older it's more like 60 to 75% (my wife is a property damage assesment agent at Progressive so, do even try to argue). And even it was 55% or so, as you had said. Do you really want a car that suffered $11,000+ worth of damage? (based on $22,000 brand new) Now i know body work can be pricey these days....But $11,000 or more in damage is one F'ed up car no matter how you slice it.
And just for future reference, the proper way without sounding like an asshat would have been to say "Evol was a little off on his numbers, you only need around 55-60% worth of the cars value in repairs to have it totaled." You could learn to be be a little nicer to people simply trying to help you instead of coming off sounding like a prick for no apparent reason whatsoever. I'm glad you didn't get it I'm sure he's pawning the problem on someone else. An statistically most owners of salvaged cars are pretty much stuck with them because nobody wants them. So once you bought it there's about an 85% chance you'd be stuck with it like he is right now. Keep hitting autotrader.com and craigslist, something is bound to pop up you'l like.
No kidding there is a nice 2004 black one type-s locally from me that was $14,000. That's a really good deal. And a red 2003 for $13,495. i didn't realize they were so reasonable used, you actually got me looking at them now.

Practise what you preach Evol. You might not have said OZ was an idiot for considering it in the 2 previous posts, but your tone made it readily apparent.
And Total Loss varies by company and state. State Farm in Ontario considers a car with over 33% of the estimated wholesale value in damage a total loss, will brand the car as salvaged, and sell it as fast as possible to a repair shop. If they sell to an Ontario shop, that shop has to return it to factory specs and it has to pass an individual frame, Mechanical and overall inspection. If they sell to Quebec, there's no standard other than it has to pass final inspection.
my tone?
Where was "my tone" harsh toward Oz....ever. There is no point for you to make a comment like that. That was uncharacteristically jackass of you to just start sh*t Gam, when you have nothing to stand on. We're all allowe to disagree on info posted on here, but that belittiling untrue jab at me for was really unnecessary. You may want to watch your own self serving tone.

there should be a record for how quickly a post can go all to hell and make no sense at all anymore.
haha
but i bought a salvaged car once. my first car. it was a ford tempo and looked like brand spanking new. it was a 1993 and this was 1995'sh (iiirc) it ran awesome everything worked and looked new still. A month or two later a friend was following me and said my car looks wierd driving down the street. He said it looks like it's driving sideways, or like on a very subtile angle. after a few months of other friends telling me the same thing i took it to a shop and had someone look at it. turns out the frame was bent and really had no way of ever fully being put back right. also like that car in the you tube thing the entire front clip was from another car. My folks were like, no way are you driving that car. But we bought it "as is" so we couldn't return it.
mind you it ran fine though. so somebody here said it's b.s. that all salvaged cars are bad, all the ones he had were fine. it may appear that way but it could be a serious death trap anyway. anyhow we tried to sell it but every potential buyer scoffed when we said "salvaged" and walked. My father fianlly donated it to a local school here about 3 years ago and they planned to just use it as a car to teach repair on NOT DRIVE. a new teacher took over and sold it to a student, that student crashed it and it crumpled up like a coke can and the kid is paralyzed now.
i feel awful for that kid and his family. but it was scary to see that it could have been me. you did the right thing walking away from the deal. i'm sure your bummed (you said your having a hard time finding one) but you made the right choice.
good luck getting one. i want one really bad but i gota finsh school before i even think of it.
^ ^ Holy Sh!t!
That story is beyond belief man. You are one lucky SOB.

The Irony of your statment is killing me. Evol is cool. He's just iritable because we've been feuding in the Honda/Acura post. It's cool now and we can all go back to being our grown-up selves.
indeed.
