Chrysler Offers Lifetime Full-Powertrain Warranty
Covers '06, '07, '08 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep vehicles

AutoWeek | Published 07/26/07, 12:47 pm et

The Chrysler group will offer a lifetime full-powertrain warranty on all 2006, 2007 and 2008 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles delivered starting today.

Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda described the program to dealers during a morning conference call.

Chrysler will continue to cover the rest of the vehicle with its three-year, 36,000-mile basic limited warranty. Vehicles with diesel engines and SRT packages are excluded.

Many Chrysler dealers had requested an expanded warranty, saying it would help them compete with offers such as General Motors' 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The warranty offer comes as Chrysler prepares to become an independent U.S. automaker owned by the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP.

Only effective on cars sold as of July 26, 2007.... Non-tranferable... And I believe something about you have to have a 5 yr check up or it voids the warrenty...

Still, that is a nice deal. I think I could manage to bring the damn thing in once in awhile.

I wonder if putting on any aftermarket power-adders voids the warranty.

There will be lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of fine print associated with this.

^That's what i thought too.
But Chrysler could manage this as now they are no longer with unreliable Mercedes-Benz.
Besides they will need to do this or anything to move units out, as they still have boatload of 2006 models at their factory lots.

lifetime in legal terms is 25 years for most consumer products.

there may be a "lifetime" mileage clause just the same as lifetime in years actually meaning only to 25.

and it is obviously only going to cover undue breakeage of power train. not natural degredation of a 300k powertrain.

Yeah because they were so much more reliable before.
Not.
Before Mercedes they were building unreliable Mitsubishi products. Now they'll just building their own unreliable carp.

If you were hoping for a lifetime powertrain warranty on your new Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep, you’re out of luck. The Chrysler Group has abandoned that plan, adopting a new transferable five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The decision to drop the lifetime powertrain warranty came after discussion with Chrysler Group’s dealership council. Owners reportedly found the ability to transfer the warranty to a new owner without penalty an appealing feature.

"The issue of transferability was something people found very appealing," said Chrysler spokesman Rick Deneau. "[The lifetime powertrain warranty] wasn’t as valuable to consumers as we might have hoped." In addition to changing the warranty coverage, the new 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty broadens the vehicles covered. The previous warranty didn’t cover any SRT vehicles, but the new plan covers the entire performance range, including the Viper. Dodge Sprinters and diesel-powered Rams, however, are exempt from the warranty.

Power train warranty is not that expensive. Motor reliability has increased ten fold from what it was 30,20 or 10 years ago. (3400 LIM anyone ? Honda D series Oil burning.. Quad head gaskets... Dodge Transmissions blowing up every year on your v6 equipped Sedan or minivan...)

I am thinking it is more along the lines of most new car buyers don't keep a car more than five years. The transferable warranty will make their vehicle worth more so it will be easier for them to buy another new car.

My wife was offered that warranty, but she would have had to take the car to the dealership for every little work done including oil change......not really worth it ....since her dad knows those type of cars like the back of his hand and I can do the basic things on the car myself.
