idk if most of you know, but I recently sold my car. I am looking into an 04 WRX for my next play car.
I am looking for some good forums, and some good sites that have a multitude of parts for these cars. Thank you in advance

i was considering one for my last car, but i kept hearing way to many horror stories about the trannies in them breaking very easily and dealerships claiming abuse. And im not even talking about people beating on the cars, people who drive them nicely have problems with the trans going out on them and dealer claiming abuse.

sorry not to mention that they are fast cars if you abuse the tranny, but otherwise they are slow. A buddy of mine has one, hes a good driver used to own a Z24 and ran 15.2 with just a few basic bolt ons. He got a WRX wagon and the best ive seen him run was like 15.2 as well. But mainly because hes affraid to launch the car hard because of the transmission. Hes also only trapping around 95 MPH. THat was stock BTW.

phil, trannys are made of glass man.. no joke.. not very reliable above that 300whp mark... local went through 2 wrx trannys making 350whp.. finally upgraded to the sti tranny.
boxer motors are REALLY tight in the engine bay.. not to mention an huge pita to work on. id try to steer away from it man... the dealer charges around 160 to change the spark plugs. (boxer motor) and to get to the top of the heads it a big pain in the ass.
have you looked into an evo or srt4?
whatever you end up doing, i would never buy a type of car in that class from someone under 30-35.. specially if its modded unless you know the history of the car personally..
iv heard alot about subie dealers being extreme tight asses about warrenty work. everythign seems to be "abuse" in their eyes.
the tranny problem was fixed in the newer ones though.. 05 or 06+
how much are u looking to spend and what are your goals?
btw how much did u end up getting otu of the cavi if u dont mind me asking. gonna miss that car

QBE, why didn't you tell me earlier.
I used to have an 03 WRX and now have an 04 STi. The WRX is plenty capable, the 2.0L in the 2002-2005 WRX's needs a little more coaxing compared to the 2.5L in the 06+ cars.
The Websites you want, in order are:
www.nasioc.com
www.i-club.com
www.clubwrx.net
Each one has multiple links to parts suppliers, tuners, info sites etc.
You don't need an STi to make power, especially if you go for the 06+ 2.5L WRX's. But 300 WHP is very easy to achieve on any WRX.

yeah but coming from a former wrx owner to an sti owner, u more then anyone here should realize the weakness in the tranny. n oit doesnt take much to make 300awhp on the the 2.0 but to put it to the ground and be RELIABLE is different.. i see that 1.66 60ft in your sig, how many of those if any do u think a wrx coudl do if it was making 300+awhp
basicly phill the wrx is designed for rally, hence for the wheels to spin, not hook up and make that kind of power... the sti was made for that to compete with the evo.

You are right about the tranny. But every car has its weak links, and honestly the WRX will be fine until you drag race it constantly. Course, its nothing a set of aftermarket gears can't cure.

so you basically say if I were to shoot for 300 awhp on a regular wrx, driving it on the street and racing from rolls I shouldnt be worried? Unless I'd be drag racing at the track and doing clutch dumps

yes go read some of the problems/trans sections on NIASA.com forums. Thats what i did before i bought mine. After reading story after story of peoples transmissions breaking and they maybe launched the car hard 3 times at most. I just scared me away. And the thing is, alot of the breakdowns happened just while normal driving. No racing or hard launching, just a casual gear shift and boom.

wait you aid yes to my question... my question was as long as I dont drag race it at the truck and clutch dump it I'd be fine, and you said yes

personally if i were you, go to the forums and just start searching and reading. From what i gathered while searching and reading, it doesnt take much to break the trans in a WRX. I couldnt see myself buying an AWD turbo car and not giving it the occasional launch on the street.

I did my spark plugs in mine in 45 minutes ... they werent hard at all?
Whats so hard to get to?
Alternator right on top , intake manifold is a few bolts , turbo can be removed in an hour or so, top mount is easy to get to i did motor mounts and trans mounts in about an hour.
And before you say ive never worked on one ... me and a buddy put a clutch in one in my driveway about a month ago ( first time doing a clutch ) , took about 8 hours and the work was fairly easy, but just time consuming.
I honestly dont see much of a problem working on them ...
And phil , i am stage 2 with a TBE , Recirc valve , and a MAF tube/ Filter and ran a 13.9 @ 99 with a crappy 2.2 60'. ( aka beat clutch )
The 5 speeds are usually better from a roll doing highway pulls .... but the 6 speed is much stronger. I dont see you having a problem with a trans , and if your really worried about them , put some money away for an STI trans, or get an 05+.
People forget they are "rally" cars and not track cars, so idiots dumping the clutch at 6k IS GOING to break trannys, probably break most stock AWD car trans.
My buddy has 3 Imprezas...a wagon, a WRX, and an STi...he beats on the latter two like the world is gonna end tomorrow, and they both run awesome...
