What's Your Real MPG?
Thursday, February 22, 2007 7:31 AM
Starting with 2008-model vehicles, the Environmental Protection Agency is revising its tests to better reflect real-world driving conditions. This Kiplinger tool will give you an estimate of what the fuel economy numbers will be for about a thousand 2007 models under the new tests.

City mpg will be reduced by 12%, on average, and highway mileage will shrink by 8%, according to EPA estimates. Gas-electric hybrids and some other high fuel economy vehicles could see even bigger reductions.

Current standards were developed back in the 1970's, when cars and driving styles were far simpler. The new standards factor in higher speeds, stop-and-go driving, more aggressive acceleration, use of air-conditioning and driving in colder temperatures. See how your vehicle will fare:

I read that a while back. i think it is good that they are doing a more real world comparison. My cavalier does better than the sticker claimed.

My 3.4 Camaro gets about.... 10-14 city.... (OUCH) but a good 27-28 highway. I'd save money on gas with an LSx swap....

My cobalt SS pulled about 25 city/highway combined

And my cavy was anywhere inbetween 15-42mpg.... (yes I averaged 42 mpg in my 2.2 OHV, for a half tank... I wanted to see how high I could get it.)

Maybe Im just pissed, pissed that my freinds are spineless, What else would you
call abandoment some night, when you're in a fight, and they could make things right?
Spineless. I miss some of my old friends, the ones who you could count on,
bet a huge amount on, the fact that they'd always have your back... Its like a kick in
the sack, just knowing, you've got nothing to fall back on. @!#$ this, Im done.

I calculate mine so I know precisely what MPG I'm getting.

I get close the the rated city mileage in the summer, but nowhere near it in the winter, or on the highway.

My average, since May 2005, is exactly 23.02 mpg.

That's spot on for the new estimates... but I hardly think my car is anything like what they tested.

Be glad you don't have my Camaro, I see maybe 8 in town is my guess, and 20 if I'm lucky on the highway.

I saw this on Motorweek about 2 months ago when they first reported it. I think it's a good thing that they are finally updating the way they calculate the average miles per gallon for cars. I am regularly beating the estimated miles per gallon rating on my Mustang (last fill up I got 24.5 miles per gallon, highest average has been 27.0 miles per gallon). I'm still getting a better mpg rating than the estimated updated tool on their website, but then again I didn't get a Mustang for an excellent miles per gallon rating...just kinda happened that way.

I wonder how this will effect the sale of hybrids, since they big selling point has been how high mpgs they can acheive.

They didn't have an '06 tC listed, but for '07 they showed 30 mpg hwy, which is pretty close to what I average. I like how they show the highs and lows for each category, but how the schmeg is a Bentley Azure a "subcompact"?

Trans Am:
18.5 MPG combined city/hwy

Cavalier RS 3100
20 MPG combined city/hwy

^ ^ ^ ^

I'm guessing they are going by interior space. My car is listed as a subcompact as well although it's larger in size than my Cavalier.

372 miles / 9.088 gal of gas = 40.933, or we can safely say 41mpg in the hatch.

230 miles to a tank, i go E after around 13 gallons its weird cuz i have a 16 gallon tank lol but the tank only takes 13 or so gallons every time i go to fill
anyways thats mostly city driving and around 17.5mpg in the Trans Am

highway driving i get really good gas mileage though id say at least 25-28 mpg, to bad i mostly have to drive in the city where theres lights every 5 seconds

Thats pretty accurate for my SS/SC. I get about 25 when I poke thro town, and 30-34 on the highway.
