eagle talon....upgrade opinions NEEDED
Monday, November 13, 2006 2:24 PM
Ok, so my friend and his dad have just purchased a 95 eagle talon and a 95? eclipse. He is going to keep the talon, simply becuase it is more rare than the eclipse (even though its the same car) Neways, he has a endless budget almost on what he can do to it. I have told him a few things like new turbo, exhaust, fuel pump and ect. Then subs and seats and the interior.....but my question is what do you think he should do to it? This will be a car for him and his dad to mess around with and race. Hes asking for my help and im asking you. Any suggestions on what upgrades you think he should do would be great.

Roll cage, gut the interior except for seats, major suspension mods, and major engine performance mods. make it a road race car!

Exactly.

I say lower it and get a good suspension. One major thing we need to know is if the car is all wheel drive or not. If it is the ESi instead of the TSi, GET RID OF THAT MOTOR and get a motor from the TSi, along with all of the all wheel drive parts. The motors on the ESi are the same motor that is in the Neons and stuff, they are JUNK.

Once you get a good motor in there, get some 17" wheels that are real nice and wide, with some good rubber on them to make that thing corner like a dream. Gut the interior, get a roll cage for it and call it a day.

hmmmm..... wants to run it on the track, but wants subs. that is a bit contradicting. Start with new injectors, fuel pump, evo III 16g or 18g, 3 inch tbe, manual boost controller and some other goodies and he can have a 13 sec car. this is all given it has the 4g63 engine, if it is the 420a (Neon motor) then tell him to get another car.

Subs can easily be taken out of the car before a race.

I just wasnt sure what else he would be missing, so i wanted to hear from you guys, and its gonna be a daily driver and they chose the car cuz they got it for 2900 bucks. But thnx, hes having a kit put on and paintd now, once its done ill show some pics....

Now, I don't know much about these cars, but I'm pretty sure that all TSi's were AWD and turbo.

Agreed, i like these cars also...they have real potential, and for a somewhat cheap price....neways he was misinformed, the eagle talon is not turboed so hes taking the eclipse instead. And it does have a 4g63 motor.....hes telling me this, hes kinda new to the whole tuner deal so im helping him, but once i see the car for sure ill no all the details...

a friend of mine has the tsi awd.. after digging into this with him, you can do all of the above mentioned things, but the largest thing, would be to upgrade to all hard piping instead of the stock rubber stuff. we are currently looking into picking up a spare motor and building it, but i mean... its really endless what you want to do to these cars, the question is, how much do you want to spend, and how fast do you want to go.

I need NAAWS. My car topped out at 140mph today. I need one of these...one of the big ones.

Sorry had to. Anyways They are pretty nice cars and pretty easy to get decent power out of. Dont forget to get a good tune or a properly set up after market computer, if your messing with a new turbo and fuel parts. Ive seen a few people get all that and skimp out on a good tune and blow an otherwise perfectly good engine. Theres a whole lot more to it than just that, but its just my 2 cents for the moment.

first off, your friend needs to know what he is going to do with it. Is he going to pack it with subs and throw on a body kit and sit out in front of a high school waiting to impress little girls? or is he going to do something worth his time?

now, one problem he is going to probably have is because his is a 7 bolt motor, watch out for crankwalk. Other than that. He can create a decent amount of power just by getting an exhaust and using a boost controller. The stock 14B is good enough to push 15PSI, aswell as the intercooler.
I do suggest upgrading to a 16G, getting a front mount with a GM Maf converter and at least a S-AFC, Exhaust and at the very minumim do a fuel pump rewire.

And as for keeping the talon because it's rarer than the eclipse.. you bastard!.. lol, I have seen hundreds of talons around here and yet to see an eclipse in person the only one I have seen was just a rebadged talon.. I think I might import one from the US.
I have a FWD Turbo talon btw. Stock everything + boost controller and exhaust = 14.3 1/4 mile time.

btw if you want to go full out race, then it's not that hard also
My room mate has a 1991 Talon AWD, basically Garret Turbo, Tubular manifold, front mount, built head and bottom w/ wiseco pistons and eagle rods, AEM EMS, full fuel system and he put down a pass of 10.99 in the 1/4 mile. Except the fuel pump fuse blew on that run, went lean and cracked the block.
but now he's building a 2.4L 4G64 block from a hyundai accent.
oh, all this on a STOCK catback, so the car is street driven, just has an electronic dump on the downpipe that he opens when at the track, or wants to make alot of noise.

If you want, I'll dig up the build sheets from the GVR4s I've built. For sure go with a 6-bolt engine. Like mentioned, the 7-bolts are prone to crankwalk. Some never have the problem, but it's impossible to predict if a given engine from the 2nd gens is going to suffer from it or not. It's just easier to eliminate it from the equation entirely. Plus, for some dumb reason, 1G 4G63 engines are often cheaper. But the reasons I recommend backdating to a 1G engine are they provide better cylinder head flow, lower compression for higher boost, and they come with bigger turbos if you buy one complete. Ditch the balance shafts, use a 2G MAF or convert to GM (either are higher flowing but the 2G Mass is a direct replacement), use an exhaust manifold from an early EVO (higher flow), an EVO front-mount to replace the stock side-mount, plumb in hard-pipes, install some yellow-top injectors, drop in an EVO RS 16G (Big 16G), and plumb a full 3" from down-pipe back. ALso remove the factory inlet canister and do hardpipe for that, or at the least, ditch the cover and run open element. Install the 1G intake manifold (also higher flowing), have the ECU retuned if you want, and go nuts.

If he really wants hardcore, give me a couple days and I'll get some of the parts from our builds and post them up here for ya.
