Teaser Pics of My Next Jeep Project
Sunday, November 12, 2006 9:08 PM

Well, I gave up on used bmws. I was going to buy an e46 this spring, and
give my folks my XJ; than reality kicked in -- anyone who entertains a bmw
out-of-warranty needs electroshock therapy. Avoiding that drama, I bought
my folks a used Grand Cherokee (I'll post pics eventually -- Izn Trbl knows
why lol), and than I decided to continue with my Cherokee. So now without
a further adu, here's some teaser pics I got from the merchant.

It's a 300mm slotted brake kit
2 Piston PBR Calipers (powdercoated red)
Stainless Steel Brakelines

The kit's on freight from Austraila. Once it gets stateside, the rotors are going
in for cryo treatment. Than I'm ordering the teraflex rear disc conversion, cryo
treating those rotors, and adding an adco F+R sway bar kit. That should spice
things up a bit lol !!!!

So that's to stop better from your 150mph runs?

... I can't speak for the other eleven XJ owners in this group buy, but
I ordered my kit so I can roll over 350Zs and brake precisely on their
roof. It will save me the trouble of waiting for decent parking spots
this Holiday Season.

truck Vs. car humor is always funny. so what year Grand Cherokee? and although like Grand Cherokees i'd still take a 350Z anyday.

lol buddy started the trash talk (not me)

I bought them a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo. 52,000 Miles (84,000kms).
I got a great deal on it (12,800cdn taxes in), and unlike a used bimmer, it
will be quick to pay off, easy to fix, and I get to keep paying low insurance
on my current Jeep. I have to say, the Grand is a really nice ride; my step
dad loves it. The fact WJs run 2 piston front calipers pretty much sealed
the deal on this brake kit for my XJ.

only thing that kept me from buying a Wrangler was the limited cargo capacity

Since the WJ is for my step-dad, I'll be keeping the mods very light. So far, I just
did some basic maintanence. I had all the fluids flushed and I had it undercoated.
It only came with one key so I had to get 2 sets of keys/fobs done. Than I order
some Mopar F+R slush mats, Cargo Tray, and Rear CD changer box for some
extra storage (it was a bitch to find all those parts in taupe). Jeep had a stupid
half-broken clarion deck, so I bought a CD/Cassette deck from a 2002 Grand;
I'm just waiting for the Chrysler Ipod2Car ipod interface before I get it installed.
My step-dad doesn't need it, but it's part of a bigger plan - I want to see how well
an ipod interface works with Mopar decks. I have a pretty deviant idea to retrofit
an RB1 Nav unit into my XJ this summer ... and as far as REAL mods go, let's
just say ever since I installed bi-xenons on my XJ... I have a hard time seeing
any Jeep without projectors.

I go to Jeepforum.com from time to time to read the posts, but I never got around
to registering.

Hey zeta, I just checked your profile... my other Jeep was a 1990 Laredo (white
2door)... small world lol. It was definitely a dependable ride (always got me home).

The rotors should be in the States in December, and the cryo treatment/shipping
should take another month. Than you figure another month until I get the rear disc
kit treated. I might be well into early February before I have all the parts... by that
point, I might want to wait for spring. I just got really excited when the merchant
sent the photos --- I had to share

No problems yet, but I hear those WJ rotors love to warp. These front rotors
for my XJ are similar in size WJ rotors, but they're actually off a Ford Falcon

why did you have them cryo treated?

Re: Teaser Pics of My Next Jeep Project

... cryo treatment is supposed to extend rotor life and prevent corrosion over a longer
period of time... and since these rotors came from Australia (expensive to ship)..
I wanted to extend their life so I don't have to, prematurely, order a new set. Here's
a good write-up on cryo treatment from tirerack.com

Long Lasting, Warp Resistant Brake Rotors

Power Slot has teamed up with Frozen Rotors to develop Power Slot Cryo cryogenically treated slotted rotors. Although not apparent to the naked eye, rotors treated cryogenically show significant improvements. Deep cryogenic processing creates dramatic increases in abrasive wear resistance and durability while also reducing residual stresses for an extra level of protection against warping

Serious drivers -- those who tend to cross the finish line first -- take their edge where they can find it. And a growing number of them have embraced the edge that they've found in cryogenically treated brake rotors. Here's why:

    - Rotors resist cracking, warping and fading.
    - Rotors last 2-3 times longer. Fewer pads and rotors are needed.
    - Rotors stop consistently and predictably, lap after lap.

Not the rotors...well i mean it is, but you can put any rotor you want on there and they will warp...that first couple years of the WJ had a @!#$ty caliper that caused the warping..

Is there a fix? I seldom visit the WJ section on jeepforum.com. Some of the WJ mods are real douchebags

I think of it as an extended warranty for my brakes. You see cryo treatment commonly used on municipal vehicles (i.e. fire engines) to extend the life of their brake parts. BTW I deal with www.icerotors.com for my cryo treatments (talk to Harald H Galinski -- he's a pretty cool guy, and he won't try to fleece you)

The brakes looks nice man. I have PowerSlots on the front of mine and enjoy them, i'm sure that new setup would be even nicer.

I saw you posted about getting the TeraFlex rear disc kit. Have you thrown around the idea of just searching around and doing a conversion using ZJ rear discs? There are a couple little modifications you would need to do, but it would save you a lot of money rather that going with the TF kit.

Definitely post some pictures when they are installed.

Have a good one,
Justin

The teraflex kit is already installed They're the small calipers in the above photo. I had everything installed in one shot. I didn't want to fool around tracking down the right parts for the ZJ conversion. The added benefit of the teraflex kit is that everything is brand-spanking new (pretty good for only 437 shipped to Canada -- from dc4wd.com). The only problem is that e-brake cables were not included with the kit, and they want 200 for the set (highway robbery). Another guy is trying KJ lines on his ZJ conversion this weekend; he'll let me know if those lines will work (ZJ and teraflex brakes have the same endlinks).

The new set-up is crazy. I'm still trying to take things easy, but my initial impression is that: the Jeep feels more stable going straight, sharp turns seem surprisingly effortless, and the brakes feel like they have allot more potential. In fact, I had some douche cut me off on the highway coming back home, and the brakes performed like champs. I didn't have to mash the pedal all the way down and hope that God would hear my prayers. My first drive after the install left me repeating "well that was easy" instead of my typical "save me god and I promise to go to church more often, drink less beer, and stop womanizing my neighbour's daughters". Nothing feels out-of-place with this set-up... everything feels improved yet very natural at the same time.

I don't have too many install pics. If you look at the first pic, you'll see where the hub was cut to fit the new front calipers. You can see the new mounting bracket in the second photo.
