A track ready, built B18 and accessories might likely kill your budget.

CRXes rule. It is nice and low to the ground and fun to zip around in. Its like driving a big go-cart. Not really sure what to tell you about performance parts though. Mine is stock. They will last forever though. Mine's gonna turn 348,000 miles this week.

Being a former DSM owner, you cant beat the cash/speed ratio of the 1st gens. What kills you is all the little things/problems u may have with them. I'm not saying all DSMs are doomed from the start, some have little to no problems through their life, others should be driven off a bridge to save the owner's sanity.
I've always liked the idea of getting a bigger honda engine and dropping it into a light body (ie. crx, civic hatch). They're fast with mild mods and are pretty reliable. Not to mention it can be done pretty cheap.

Get a bigger Ford engine (302, 351W, stroked 302, big block) and drop it into a light body (Fox body Mustang). Faster with milder mods, plus more potential, and pretty reliable. And easily as cheap, if not cheaper, than the Honda swap idea.

id go with the fox body. I like the idea of dropping a bigger ford engine in it. i think it would be about the same moneywise, or maybe evn cheaper. it would definitely be faster though.

Do I really need to say F-body? One can be had for cheap with a 350. Parts are dime a dozen and all over the place. You can avoid the motor swap and go right to the modding. Hell a 350 with nitrous (decent shot) can give you some pretty good times.

yes F's are a good buy as well. i bought my old 85 T/A a couple of years ago rust free and loaded for $2800, you can find an older clean six powerd 'Maro or 'Bird for around a grand. Swap in SBC, add fuel and your done.
