thinking about getting a bike
Monday, August 07, 2006 2:00 PM
Well guys.

I'm thinking of getting a motorcycle guys. something I can drive around here and there in order to try to save money at the pump. considering I would only use it to get to school and travel around mission valley I was wondering if this was the most fuel efficient way to go nowadays.

Any input on this? or should I just keep driving my cav?

if ur goal is strictly gas mileage

a bicycle would do better but i bet ur travelign is too far for comfort on a bike.

i think a moped also gets better mileage. but of course has the moped factor, which isnt very good lol.

but for fast transportation, a motorcycle is definitely the most fuel efficient.

take the motorcycle safety course, wear full gear no matter the weather, and drive defensively.

of course, I've seen more than my fair share of people getting hurt.

hell a lady friend of mine got killed....

Any suggestions on a decent bike? I'm not in the market for speed or anything. just something to get around in.

if you want something trictly for the transportation and are nto cnocerned with its high speed cornering or "stunt"ing abilities

go on the cheap and get an older ninja 500

or an older fzr 400 or 600

if your wanting something that looks new and up to date than maybe think about a suzuki sv650

its hard to answer without more details. are you looking for the sportbike type or a cruiser? new or old?

Cruiser would be more comfortable to ride on, personally I'm looking for a new sportbike.

Nari- were you looking at anything in particular? I've been doing quite a bit of digging recently...

it''s not like I'm about to go out and buy one. this is just the initial testing of the waters before I really go out and start doing research. but this thread had piqued my interest.

now consider how much gas, your car uses extra over what a bike would do

then figure out how long it will be to pay for said bike, and you can figure out if it's a savings

if you want a basic transportation bike, check out the suzuki gz250, its rated at 82 mpg

If basic transport is what you want, go for a naked bike. They are more comfy, cheaper on ins. and better on fuel. They lack wind protection and speed, but that's about it. The Honda 599 nas the F3 motor (well developed) with an upright riding position and good comfort. For a few more bucks there's the Ducatti Monster 620, similar bike. Then there's bikes like the Suzuki SV650, another good starter, optional fairings for a sportier look. They can keep up to the sportbikes fairly well actually.

Sit on a bunch, find what you like, that's comfy enough, in your price range etc. But be sure you like it. Do not rush your purchase, you have a lot of options.

How big are you? How fast do you want to go? What is your experience?

Take the MSF course (as mentioned) and hold back close to $2000 for gear. Get good gear, it may save your life and it lasts a long time (if you don't crash).

I have a 04 honda CB600f. Its the 599 motor buts its carbed. I get about 40-50mpg. Bought it w/ a little over 1k miles on it for $4500 and the guy threw in a riding jacket, helmet, and gloves.

My understanding is that the 599 uses the F3 motor (always was carb'd).

Carbed engines are less reactive, read more forgiving, not so twitchy.

I would not recommend an injected 600 or larger for any new rider. It's easier to learn on a carb'd bike.

Take the safety course, and the test ride afew bikes. Find the one that's the most comfortable for you.

A naked bike is going to be alot less.

A couple of popular first bikes:
Suzuki GS250
Honda Rebel
Kawasaki Ninja 250
Kawasaki EX 500
Suzuki GS500
Buel Blast

dont buy new for your first bike.

I only sell used bikes, never buy them. There are two philosophies on this.

I like knowing absolutely everything that has ever happened to a bike. The only way to be sure is to buy it out of the crate (new). Then there are the people who know you will drop your first bike (at least, maybe other bikes too depending) and think that the damage to a new bike is a shame and too costly to fix. I think both arguments have merit. Personally, I buy new only (except for maybe a dirt bike or mini, because you just don't go that fast on them) because I go to the track and I want a bike that doesn't have anything belt or out of balance. I hit some pretty fast top speeds and the last think I need is to find out some bearrings are shot at 260km/h.

For a beginner, not going to the track, I think it's safe to buy used. If you are not buying a sportbike, the used option is more acceptable as well. Naked bikes and cruisers tend not to get hammered as hard as the sportbikes.

Bikes hold there value well, so that isn't that much of a factor. The loss you take when you resell will be minimal either way.

soory to kinda post jack. dont know whats fuel efficient.

shifted- u said u were looking at either an r6 or an f4i. i assume used otherwise u would have said 600rr. ive owned an r6 and have ridden an f4i, my opinion would be the r6 hands down. a little more aggressive riding position, but worth the trade off in comfort for performance. in casae ur wondering why i got rid of the r6, i upgraded to an r1. just my .02 cents

Look on Ebay. I just bought a 1979 Yamaha XS400 for $810.00. The bike is almost like new and has only 10,000 miles on it. I bought it just to ride back and forth to work. It gets around 60-70 MPG's. You should be able to find something decent close to where you live. Plus if you buy it and then decide riding a bike is not for you , you don't have a ton of money invested in it. Just a thought.

Honda kept the F4i when they introduced the CBR600RR, they just went back to the bannana seat and called it comfy.

So either CBR600 is still available new, F4i or RR. Of course I feel the couple extra $$ for the RR is worth every penny, but for some reason the F4i still sells.

Keep in mind that the performance difference from one 600cc superspor to another is barely detectable to the novice rider. I would suggest that you get the bike that fits you well and that budget allows. Yes there are performance differences but they are measured in miliseconds. There are not big gaps from one to another when compairing the Japanese supersports. Like I said, the Triumph was the only one with a noticable performance issue. It just doesn't have the power, but it sure turns well and is nice to ride and wonderful to look at.

I drag raced an 04 F4i with my 03 RR and only beat him by about half a bike.
