FREE PRESS EXCLUSIVE: Camaro to roar back by 2008
August 6, 2006
FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITERS
It's really happening: The Chevy Camaro is coming back as a production car, the Free Press has learned.
General Motors Corp. Chairman Rick Wagoner is expected to announce the resurrection of the legendary muscle car in a speech Thursday to an automotive conference in Traverse City.
The auto industry has been buzzing with speculation about GM's plans for the Camaro ever since the carmaker wowed the crowds at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January with a stunning 400-horsepower concept. At a time when truck and SUV sales are softening and car sales are regaining momentum, a sexy new entry could give GM's entire passenger-car line a boost.
The production version could be built as early as 2008 and will offer three engines, a V-6 and two V-8s, according to people familiar with the plans.
GM spokesman Steve Harris would not comment Friday on plans for the Camaro, but other sources told the Free Press that GM's top management and board of directors have green-lighted the car.
The Camaro was introduced in 1966 as the answer to the Ford Mustang, and it prowled America's streets and drag strips until production ended in 2002.
Like the concept, the production Camaro will be based on GM's new Zeta global architecture for rear-wheel-drive cars, expected to form the basis for several big, powerful sedans and coupes to be introduced over the next few years.
It was unclear last week where GM intends to build the Camaro. Speculation in the automotive press has centered on assembly plants in Oshawa, Ontario, and Wilmington, Del.
well DUH, anyone who didnt think they were going to make it was a fool.
Maybe you'll see a good TA and Buick GNX on the same chassis?
I still say 2008 is not soon enough, but I'm liking this..
Hoepfully it'll sell here in Canuckistan....

And you just spew out

as it comes huh. The RWD Impala will not come out for 2008 m/y. The Cobalt will not be on a "Delta 2." It is just getting a mid-life face lift with LNF of an option. And you are still spewing more

with the "nox"

.... It is Equinox!!

Oh Snap!!! Mr. GW just pnw3d you good!
I do agree with jbody03eco though. I would love to see a TA. It wouldn't be right to have a Camero and not a Firebird, even though it really wouldn't make too much sense building the same car twice.
Pre end of production had Mustang > Camero and Firebird sales combined. If they went back to the old days when each line up had it's own motors, then I could see it. That is not cost effective though and GM needs to get out of the hole, not deeper in it.

That would be even more useless.
GM sees the Camaro and T/A as the EXACT same car. They arent competing against each other. A consumer is either going to buy a Camaro or a T/A ... cars made on the same platform in the same factory ... buying one over the other doesnt dip into eithers sales.

No, but it costs more money for the re tooling to make two differant sets of panels, interiors, wiring, ect. It's just not cost effective when the car is in the same market and targets the same crowd. This is part of the problem that got GM in the hole in the first place. Building the same differant car with 2-3 differant names. It doesn't make sense.

It will be a GTO.
To bad so sad.
The T/A concept blew the Camaro concept out of the water.

Huh? The T/A concept was just a photoshop of the Camaro concept.

So... they shouldn't build the Solstice since the Sky looks better and they're basically doing to same thing? GM has a tendency to make the exact same car but different badging and panels. I think they should bring the Firebird back. I know plenty of people who aren't just F-body fans, they prefer one or the other.

On the '08 Cobalt I know that they are going to have the 2.0 Turbo just like the Solstice GXP and Sky Redline.
But I keep on hearing from umm yeah the inside to watch out for AWD !!! Mainly because they want it on the HHR so ummm yeah we will see.
if the cobalt came AWD i would be the first one with one. that would be soo nice to have.
awd on the HHR? that would be sweet
by 2009 or so GM is really gonna have a really nice lineup, the impala/monte carlo is getting a whole makeover, cobalt, camaro, GTO, and ive herd of another RWD pontiac sedan and of course the trucks that are debuting now.
i like what im seeing as of late

But the different styling appeals to two different types of people. Is it cheaper to build two completely different cars to appeal to two different audiences, or use the same underpinings and just slap on a different exterior and interior.
I'm with Jinxed on this one. In recent history the TA has looked way better then the Camaro.
But I perfer the looks of the Camaro just like I like the looks of the Cavalier over the Sunfire.
Also it is cheaper for them to make exterior/interior changes. It is expensive to do a platform change.
even with the t/a being a photo shop on the camaro
it still beats the any of the gto pics ive seen
to me they could refine the current gto into a sleaker judge , or go retro in styling
i like the current gto (04-06) and i hate all the pics ive seen
id rather have the T/A identical to the photoshop pics

Yep true on the rumor. I did I a thread on that last year. But upon closer inspection, there is absolute no room for it. Unless GM does some sort of hack job or after thought to cram it in.
