Antique project truck ideas?
Tuesday, March 21, 2006 1:51 PM
Ok so I haven't been active on these forums in a while but I trust the opinions of everybody here more than I would the subaru forums for something like this lol. So what I'm looking for is a nice project truck, I'd say pre-73'. I like the looks of the 1950's chevy pickups but they've reached into that decade where no-motor plus rust but straight frame = $5000. I'm looking for a whole truck, something less than a grand would be sweet, and something that could be made driveable with another grand or so. Any ideas? I'm not looking for a hotrod or lowrider or offroader, I'm looking for something that I could make look nice but use at the same time.... ie wax the front and sides but NOT the inside of the bed you know? It will be my only truck if I get something so it might be used to move furniture still.

I like 1967-72 C-series but I'm partial to stepsides ever since that C20 my dad got rid of when I was a kid *damn* and they can be kinda hard to find unrestored/hotrodded.... anyways does anybody have any suggestions? I'm partial to GM obviously but will consider others... and second wheres the best place to find deals for these types? You look on ebay and you're competing with like 5 million other people looking for the same thing and you look on a project car or antique listing and they know what they're worth and a add a couple grand to that. I might have a couple ideas for looking local though....

I don't know about anyone else, but to me an antique truck is an 1930-something. Something from 1950 and newer is not an antique truck, it is a classic truck. By your reasoning a 69 Camaro would be considered an antique car. It is not.

i love the 50's chevy's... my dad used to have a 55 series one (looked like the 48-54 trucks that he ripped the inline six out of and dropped in a 327 with 3 deuces and a 4spd. i wasn't alive to see it but i've seen pics and it was badass.

find one... they are awesome

to me an SUV (Typhoon) isn't a truck, a Pick up truck (syclone) is a truck

I agree that the typhoon is the better choice though

My favorites are '55, '64-'66, and '72. I wouldn't even touch one unless it was 2wd and short box. Single tone paint, Rally wheels, and a slight drop, nothing could be sweeter

I personally have a 48 Ford F2 pickup truck as my project, the 62-66 F-series trucks are nice and can be found in your price range. As for the Chevys, late 60's early 70's would be what I would look for however these are popular so for your price you may have some problems.

I'd go a different route for a classic truck. Who doesn't have a fixed up old chevy or ford? They are pretty much cookie cutter vehicles now. I'd want something that everyone doesn't have just to be different.

I'd get a Studebaker, Hudson, International, or Dodge pickup. I'd try to find one outside the rust belt in a barn that is complete because parts are pretty much obsolete.

Elcamino's and Ranchero's are newer but are still pimp. You can never go wrong with either of them....Except maybe the big ugly mid-late 70's models

What about an old flat nose truck? Like an Ford Econoline, Dodge A100, VW single/crewcab, or Chevy Corvair Rampside? Maybe build something like the "Little Red Wagon" a big ass motor in the back?

Early, early chevy truck. My shop teacher had this fantastic early 40's Chevy. Candy Apple Red. Just an amazing truck. He was 24 at the time I was in high school. It was really inspiring to see someone so young have something like that truck. Always wanted to do something like that. What ever you get, make sure you send pics. Love to keep up on any progress...

Find an old COE truck to fix up they're big time cool !! You know like one from the 40's.
That would be awesome. Then build it into a hauler and build a matching street roded pick up to ride on its back! True this will be expensive but your sure to bring home trophies like crazy!

NOTE: COE stands for Cab Over Engine.

An old willy's pick up would also be cool.

pick up an antique truck trader i found a lot of good deals when i was looking for my street rod. Another great idea would be to check out the car swap meets there's a big one here in Ohio every couple of months and there's tons of old cars and trucks to choose from. I'd say find a old international but parts are getting harder and harder to get for them.
